i looked at them, and they looked at me and then one of them looked at her friend and pointed towards me with her eyes and then smiled in a giggly kinda way. I'm pretty sure its a good thing, but just wanted to make sure. If one were to act on a situation like that, how would one approach the girlies? thanks

First, grab some maturity...you use that terminology anywhere they can hear...such as a public forum like this...and you are going to go from "cute possibility" to "not in a million years."
Next time it happens give yourself a quick mental once-over to see if there is a possiblility that the "barn door" might be open, or similar socially embarassing situation could be why she was giggling.
You could use non-verbal communication to break the ice...generously wave to an empty nearby seat as an invite...especially if there is room for both of them. You could attempt to speak to them - in a mature manner. If you have some cash in your pocket, you can invite them both out for a coffee and a chat.
The worst possibility is simply being told off (verbally, or non-verbally). Best result, you could end-up with a date with one, the other, or both! Chances are, if they are nervous, they will simply ignore you, or say no thanks. If they are friendly, you could end-up with a pleasent hour or three of company with a couple of pretty ladies.

Was there an odor in the subway like someone had just f@rted? Maybe they confirmed it between themselves that it was you who had done it. If this was the case they didn't want to be approached by you.

I would of probably walked up to them and asked them about it. That is just me though, even though I would of been nervous at first.
