They realize they are at the end of the line. No more options. I think a convicted murder is the best candidate for accepting Jesus. They have no hope in this world. MAYBE it is not the people in jail that is the problem in the world. MAYBE it is us people in the free world living our comfortable, pleasurable lives. Why do we need God in our lives? Well we have everything we need and if we lack things we just work to obtain those things. Then we pat ourselves on the back and praise ourselves for how great we are. We can't all be like the Amish. I realize that. We call those people crazy for living a pure and innocent life. I thank God that He brought me to the knowledge of my need of a Savior and how misserable my life was without Jesus Christ. I thank God that I don't depend on the pleasures of the world to make me happy. I thank God that it didn't take me ending up in Jail to realize I need God. Maybe it is just me, but I found many times in my life that I was a step away from crossing the line and being just as bad as those people in jail. I sometimes wonder why it isn't me in that jail.

It depends on the individual. Are they going to be sent to prison, are they on death row, or are they doing small time?

People who spend a few days in jail are highly unlikely to repent or ask for God's guidance.

Long term time is another deal. Inmates have nothing but a cold room, uncomfortable bed, and God - for weeks, months, even years. It gives them time to come to terms with what they have done and it gives them a chance to see the light - they realize what they have done is wrong.

Many will do it out of fear because they're in a new place with individuals they do not know, they're on their own for once.. And you'll want to turn to God for guidance and comfort.

Others are genuine in their prayers and search for God while in jail/prison for obvious reasons - They're going to die and want to make things right, they're sincerely sorry for what they've done and are willing to make changes, or they need help to get back on the right path.

No matter how much someone has sinned, God is always there to forgive them.. He's knocking on your door, all you have to do is let Him in. Sometimes going to jail is what it takes to make a person realize that he's not so big afterall.

Because now they have the time to consider other things besides themselves. They may be wondering where they went wrong too? But whether in jail or out this brings up a very important issue? Do people take the time to test their beliefs? Its one thing to say I believe and quite another to do what is right.
If you have prayed this prayer at Mathew 6: 9,10 and still don't know what it means and what the bible says on the answers to it. Then you have not taken the time to understand God's word. When you do read this prayer take time to consider that God doesn't want your thoughts on it,he wants you to see his thoughts and bring your life into harmony with them. See Psalms 83:18, Daniel 2:44, Revelation 21:3,4, Mathew 5:16

Jail is the first time most who go there have ever been confronted with the reality of cause and effect. The world has progressed to the point that people don't have to pay consequences for misbehavior, because it wouldn't be nice to make them do so, facetiously said, so when they get to jail they realize that God is not a teddy bear.

They have lots of time on their hands, they are bombarded by missionary types and the gatherings are a great way to pass information and distribute drugs.

If someone commits a crime they should go to a solitary cell and have no interaction with the other prisioners and think about what has caused them to be in this situation. I also think that they should work for privileges. Couple hours of work for a couple hours of tv...

It doesn't necessarily have to be jail but often God must crush a person before their life can be rebuilt. Such is the nature of our pride and sinfulness. I've have many brothers in Christ who spent as much as 25 years in prison that I would totaly entrust my life with. Some of us should have spent time in prison for what we've done but God's mercy worked differently. Don't claim to understand it all but I know only God can change a heart.

People of all walks of life that has any reasoning factors somehow believe that God will rescue them in times of troule but it does seem that as God does they themselves once again place God back on the shelf and they go on living their lives not really comiting themselves to the living God only to find themselves digging more deeper into the pit. God does and will help you butHe does so in want of your return love and devotion. The time will come that his ear will grow deaf and his voice shall not be heard by those whose lives are not commited to HIM..

Some people can't stay still long enough to find or know they need God. Being in jail, gives them time to think about past mistakes and the wise ones who really desire to make a positive change tend to find God. This is great, if it's true faith and desire to please Your Heavenly Father.

Various reasons, especially hope and fear.

I suppose there are some rare cases where the person genuinely repents of what he has done and wants to be loved, saved, etc. I'm not sure if this is the best sort of motivation for belief, though, since you're in the middle of suffering.
