I'm buying my Mum a set-top box, not one with a built in recorder, just the ordinary kind. Can you recommend one that seems good in terms of value for money, ease of use, and reliability? I don't want to pay a lot more than £20 but would pay a bit more than that if it seemed to match my criteria.

I can only suggest that you inquire with your neighbours to see if they have it and how they have got it set up. Some will work OK and then some might not. You must be clear of any obstruction and have the aerial pointing toward Dover TV station or better still Maidstone[bluebell hill]. If you are in that position you willbe able to get a good signal. The lowest price receiver will cost £25.

Just wander into tesco or asda or another supermarket. They do the cheapest and the only differences between settop boxes is whether it has a built in recorder or not. So all the cheaper ones are pretty much the same.
Really doesnt matter which brand or type. They all do exactly the same thing and you only pay more for the name.

Good freeview boxes are getting closer to £20 but are not really there. If you are in a good freeview area any box will do. However if you get weak terrestrial signals you may need to look at specific brands. Humax is one brand that uses a more sensitive tuner which should provide smoother viewing. With digital it is all or nothing, which can lead to a messy picture. However more sensitive boxes cost more £60+.

sainsbury's had been selling a good alba stb8 unit for £20, reduced to £18 two days after I bought it! D'oh!
didn't notice any difference between that and and some of the good ones, if it's just to watch soaps and mum stuff telly then why spend the excess.
