Sometimes I get shaky and feel like I'm overheating with no warning. Usually eating will take care of it, but sometimes I'm almost binging until the feeling subsides. This morning it happened only 2 hours after eating 2 waffles loaded with blueberries. Is this normal? Should I see a doctor? I'm nursing- could this have anything to do with it?

Thanks!

Although hypoglycemia usually occurs with diabetes, it does sound like your blood sugar is dropping after you eat. Do you understand why this might be happening?

When you eat a meal that has a lot of carbohydrates in it (waffles would be an example), your body breaks them down into sugar, and then your pancreas kicks out insulin to lower the blood sugar level.

The best way to avoid having this happen is to eat small meals that contain some protein, a small amount of fat and the amount of carbohydrate that is right for you. The other thing that you might want to try to do is to drink a little more water (not sugar laden sports drinks), since dehydration can really make you feel worse. Nursing can really change your metabolism and you're better off, nursing or not, having steady blood glucose levels.

I can understand why you might want to eat until the feeling gets better, but six small meals a day or three regular meals plus healthy snacks will be better for you. Any chance that you could meet with a dietitian or nutritionist? Most of them have great ideas about this.

You might still want to get this checked out with your doctor. Simple tests can show the levels of glucose in your urine and blood. Good luck!

sounds like hypoglycemia. nursing may have something to do with it but not to the point that you'll have to stop. i'd give the doc a call. they'll do some blood work to find out for sure.

you are burning so many calories breast feeding. Just tons and tons. so i bet you are just not eating enough. It sounds like you are not getting enough nutrients and that your blood sugar is extremly low. Eat every couple of hours b/c breast feeding like i said burns TONS of calories.
