Kids who don't have relatives or parents are also placed in the foster care system. There are also "group homes" which are basically orphanages.

There sure are. I know of two within 30 miles of my home. The Nazarene Children's Home and a Baptist Children's Home. Most of the children are school age. Babies and special needs are usually in foster homes, but foster homes are often what are used instead of orphanages.

I used to work at a psychiatric hospital for children and adolescents. We had one little girl there who was basically an orphan. She didn't have a serious psychiatric disorder and I used to remark to other staff that the little girl was only there because there are no true orphanages any more.
Fortunately she was adopted by a family so she got to leave.

There are still orphanages, mainly as holding places until they can be fostered out or are old enough to live on their own

They have "group homes" - I knew a guy who lived in one when I was in high school. But from what I understand, they're much better for the kids than the stereotypes you see in old fairy tales.

No, not anymore. We closed them in the 1960s and now we only use "foster homes" to house the children without homes.
