HI there,

I'm 22 years old, and currently in a dead end job, i left college because the last thing i wanted was to spend the rest of my life fixing computers.

So I’m wondering if anyone out there knows what good, stable careers are, I’m a little scatter brained about this, every day I think of something new to be, recruitment consultant, mortgage advisor, financial advisor, management… I have no idea what I really want to do! All I know is, I want to have a safe and secure future, and I’m willing to study for it.

I was going to be a freelance photographer but my eyes are starting to go, so this has put me into a bit of a frenzy to find a new career, if anyone has any good idea’s I’d love to hear them!

I’ve also heard about lists that predict good careers for the future, if anyone has any of those that’d be great.

Cheers!

If you're good with your hands and have good logic plumbing, but if I were you I'd do a few short courses to find out what really interests you.

Sometimes the worst thing you can do is sit and think about what you'd like to do, because you end talking yourself out of almost every good idea, doing a short course gives you a taste without much risk.

just an idea!

Almost all areas of employment have cycles.

What is currently an open field (with high pay) will change in 2 to 4 years as the market gets flooded with new graduates lowering available openings and the pay. When a large group that entered the same field 40 years ago are retiring which usually takes about 6 years the available openings is high again and the pay goes up. The cycles are repeated about every 8 to 20 years.

Examples: Accountants, Engineers, Health Care Specialists and nurses. Try asking someone over 60 yrs old if they remember the nurse shortages in the 60s, 80s and now.

Find something you like that at some time in the past was a high paying job, at some time it will again become a high paying job with the cycles.

For the next 30-40 years anything for the elderly from estate lawyer to funeral director to doctor or nurse.
We are turning 60 at a rapid pace, figure out what we will want next. Many will want motor homes, single level houses, vacation location property, travel and have questions about the best withdrawal places from life savings or weather to take an annuity or lump sum from a company.
So you can take care of our wants and needs and have a secure future.

Fixing computers is probably a bit limited, but you could look to move more into computer and information security. This is a growing area and we do have a skills shortage in the industry here in the UK.

Get into construction. There's not much money in it to begin with but plenty at the end. And besides, we're not going to stop building things in our lifetime...
