Sam, u do not have to be a citizen to join the military just a resident, imo the govt should give them residency while they are in and to gain citizenship should be in for at least 8 years to get citizenship

The Romans used to make migrants serve in the army for a period of 25 years. After that 25 years, they would then be granted automatic citizenship (i mean unless they were killed, deserted).

The problem with using migrants in the military is that they have to have a vested interest in what they are fighting for. They would have to be granted citizenship first, and then be sent into the army.

Otherwise, if you send soldiers who have no vested interest in what they are fighting for, then they will be less likely to fight and more willing to desert. A military force that has soldiers that are less likely to fight is a weakened military and is vulnerable not only to defeat, but to desertion and low morale.

They would have to know fluent English - unless you want to train the rest of the army in how to speak Mexican? The communication ability of the army is undermined if the entire force is unable to communicate effectively. The Persians learnt that problem.

The Romans learnt that if you dont have a fighting force that is united and is fighting a cause or for the state, then they are no better than hired mercenaries. And if you go down that road, you can kiss the U.S military supremacy goodbye.

If anyone from any nation decides to fight for this country I would show the same respect that I show all men and women of the armed forces.

While they are serving and after their service is completed, I believe they should receive medical, educational, and retirement benefits, regardless if they choose citizenship.

Seven years of interrupted service should qualify an individual for citizenship.

*** Daniel F *** You are mad don't be. More Hispanics have received the Medal of Honor then any other race. Don't dishonor what they have accomplished. Go to the USS Yorktown at Patriot Point in Charleson, SC and see for yourself. There is a Medal of Honor Museum there.... see for yourself. These were good men. All of them. We should follow there examples.

We already have a program that address that question. Anyone who serves in the armed forces can become a citizen. Illegals are criminals and should be treated as such. So should those who hire them.

I think anyone who serves our nation in the military service should have priority for citizenship if he/she should choose.
I served with Greeks, Canadians, Australians, Koreans, Italians, Philipinos, Mexicans, Spaniards, Chinese, and Japanese citizens in the Vietnam War and ALL were valiant warriors for our cause.

I think the military would benefit from that, not because they are illegals, but there is a shortage on enrollment. I think there is something about that in the point system they want to give on the Immigration Bill they want to pass. I am all for it, I am sure there a lot of illegal immigrants who really LOVE this country who has adopted them and they will defend it as if they were born Americans.

If they are helping our country in the military, they should stay in the US, because with the military trying to recruit, there are less americans joining. So if we let people who want to join the military stay in the US then the military grows larger then it will mean the less the soldiers would have to deal with extensions and staying there longer.

Frankly, I think that if someone goes to the military recruiter and says I am an illegal alien or cannot prove they are here legally, they should just be arrested and deported. End of story.
