this is a touchy one- you want to be there for your friend, but you don't want to give the appearance of acandal. ( for you nonCatholics- scandal is the appearance or reality of setting a bad eaxample)

Ask if she got permission to be married in a nonCahtolic church. IE- maybe the minister is a good friend of one of them or a relative. Situations like that, they can get permission from the bishop, but they still need to go through Catholic premarital counseling.

If not, you can't attend the wedding- and you should tell her WHY. Becuae her marriage will be invalid in the eyes of the church, which means she will be living in a fornicating relationship- so you cannot be at the wedding to show support for a sinful happening.

You may attend the wedding reception, if you want, believe it or not. That is the sage advice from a VERY orthodox priest. You should also remind her friend that they may NOT receive the Eucharist if they have not been married according to Church law....that is UNTIL they get their marriage convalidated ( 'blessed') and go to Confession.

If your goddaughter is not Catholic and her fiance is not Catholic, YES you may attend their wedding.

The only time we cannot attend a wedding is if a Catholic is being married outside of Church rules.

If you're an invited guest, you can go to the wedding no matter where it is held.

The minister of the Sacrament of Matrimony is not the priest. It is the bride and groom. Each administers the sacrament to each other, with a priest observing so that everything happens in accordance with Catholic beliefs. Therefore, it is possible for a marriage to tkae place in a non-Catholic Church and still be valid in God's eyes.

What concerns me is the idea that two Catholics want to marry in a non-Catholic Church. There must be a reason they do not or cannot get married inside the Catholic Church.

If there is something that is preventing them from marrying inside the Church, that is to say - this union cannot be consecrated in the eyes of God, what chance does this union have of being consecrated outside the Catholic Church?

I fear that this couple, for whatever reason, is trying to "beat the system". I hope that's not what's happening because the effects of such a mistake will keep turning up like a bad penny for the rest of their life.

*Is Catholic*

You are allowed to go to a wedding between Christians so long as it is sacramental. Non-Christian wedding can also be attended, within reason.

Two Catholics here are getting married, but not in a Catholic Church. Canon Law says that this will be a sacramental marriage only if they have a dispensation from the Bishop to marry outside of the Church.

Do they have a dispensation?

If they do not have a dispensation, the marriage will not be valid and both will be bared from communion until the marriage is validated.

A good long conversation with your God-daughter is needed.

Personally, I do not understand why two Catholic cannot be married in a Catholic Church.

Why couldn't you go??? You are not converting, just going to the wedding..
There must be some conflict with the Catholic priest for them to go to a non Catholic church..
I am a Christian and I can go to any church I want for a funeral, marriage ect.. I am going for the event, not because I agree with the religion..
