She's my mother's cat and well, my mother is not a big fan of exercise. I know about hanging feathers in front of a fan and a couple of other tricks, but this cat just seems stubborn or bored!

I already know much of what you all have mentioned here and I appreciate your comments very much. I like the idea of a laser toy, and changing the diet. I have tried all of the following:

Catnip, Numerous toys, no people food, a safe "kitty-proof" yard, limited food and plenty of water.

I would first off change her food to the a diet for indoor cats ..
Try a few toys that you can wind up and she can chase..
Or hang some things from doorknobs that get her attention and she can swat around.
If she is an older cat and has never really played a lot she could very well be bored.. she does need attention.. and playing with her would help her a lot..out of her boredom and also get her more active..
Feed her once a day.. about a cup of dry .. and always have fresh water on hand.
Don't give her too many treats.. as they are high in calories.

NO, no! Letting the cat outside is NOT a good solution! Indoor-only cats live MUCH longer than cats that are allowed outdoors. Outside cats are usually killed by predators, disease, or cars within just a few short years.

There are ways to give a cat exercise indoors. Get toys that they like to play with on their own. Mine love those little plastic balls with the bells inside, and the little mice with catnip. Get the toys that look like fishing poles, with feathers or things they like at the end of a string attached to a pole. They love chasing those and it's not hard to do even for an owner who's a total couch potato. Make foraging toys - for example, take a small plastic bottle and cut holes in it, then put favorite treats inside, so your cat has to work it to get to the goodies (that didn't work for mine, but other cat owners report success).

Also, consider diet. Maybe the cat should switch to a weight control food, or one that has a lower carb content, like Innova. My fat kitty has lost weight on that.

Cats by nature sleep MOST of the time, so you won't be able to keep your cat active all the time. But even just 10-15 minutes of hard play is huge.

It is not really hard to play with a kitty. Get one of those feather toys, with a long stick, and long string with some sort of toy hanging from it. then your mom wont even have to get off of the couch. It is very important to exercise your kitty. If not they will get fat and that is not healthy at all. Maybe change to a food that is for fat kitties too. Remember to mix it gradually unless you dont care if your house smells like cat poo. Because they will get the poops if you dont not.

Get one of the tapes that you can put on the televisions to have the cat watch and more toys. You can also get the laser toys where the cat can chase the light around and your mother doesn't even have to move from her seat, just run the light around. she also needs to change the food and and not feed it any people food along with any treats.

That kitty needs a diet. It's hard to run around when your weighted down. Really, get that cat on some high quality, diet cat food.

As for the exercise, I recommend cat nip and a laser pointer. My cats go insane just seeing the pen - they know the little red dot is coming.

If your mom's fat cat will chase bugs, or has any prey drive left - you should really try one of these.

First of all don't feed the cat so much. Watch his/her intake of food. What I would do is put catnip on his/her scratching post or scratching board and sit back and watch him/her have fun. Maybe get a piece of string and drag it around. Cats love to chase string. I know in some catalogs they have remote control toys that you can control and the cats just love. Go to your pet store and see what they have for cats to get exercise. Good Luck!!

Getting cats to exercise can be hard especailly if over weight. Every little bit you can get them to do helps. Even playing for a few minutes. Have you try cat nip toys. Also try and encourage him to go up and down stairs. When you feed him take him upstairs even if that means carrying him up then dish up his food and call him so he has to come down to get it . Feed him smaller meals. If he gets dry you can get balls designered for pet that you can put treats or some of their food in and they have to roll around to get the food out so gets them to exercise. Just stick with it .
