I'm with the folks who say to take them your pharmacist. They've found in areas where the waterways are showing puzzling pollution problems, that much is being caused by pharmaceutical poisoning. Some of this is directly attributed to hormone based products that are either being dumped directly [either down the drain, or flushed] but there is also speculation that there is a significant amount being passed through urine. This means that even the water purification and filtering isn't enough to remove it.

Flushing pills is a bad idea because it can cause harm to the ecosystem.
I quote:
Dispose of the waste in household trash.
1. Keep products in their original containers. Pharmaceutical container caps are typically watertight and child proof.
2. Add a small amount of water to a solid drug or some absorbent material such as kitty litter, sawdust or flour, to liquid drugs before recapping to discourage any unintended use of the drug.
3. Double seal the container in another container or heavy bag to prevent easy identification of the drug container or to prevent a glass container from breaking.

DO NOT THROW IN TOILET ... BAD FOR ECO-SYSTEM. Capsules: open and gather ingredients; regular pills can either be mashed up or set in liquid to desolve (slow process) ... take all these ingredients and put in container, mix with used coffee grinds, cat litter, flour ... seal contained very tightly so that it will not open by itself if thrown around in garbage truck, I suggest duct taping it closed (yes, another use for duct tape) and if you are sure it cannot be opened throw in garbage ... even if someone gets it, the contents are of no use to them. (Based on 2004 Gov't Advisory) I live in an area where there is no drug return programs ...

i've got heard that in case you flush old pills down the lavatory, a number of the prescription unearths this is way into eating water, because of the fact while the water is wiped sparkling, the prescription pill residue isn't all bumped off. So each and every time all of us takes a drink, the are growing to be a small quantity of the prescription.

the best way is to flush them down the toilet, or you can bring them to the hospital and tell them you would like them properly disposed of, and they would most likely take care of them for you! It's dangerous to put them in the garbage can because little kids or pets could get into it and eat them on accident. or in the dump, they could hurt animals or someone else. Down the toilet, the pills will disolve, and are at less of a risk to harm someone or something.

When my Mom died in March, HOSPICE did the same as we've been doing for years -- DOWN THE DRAIN
However studies are showing NOT GOOD IDEA.
NEVER put them in the trash, you don't know who is dumpster diving and you could be blamed.
Check with your city on medicine disposal and see if toilet is ok because of YOUR own water treatment plant equipment.
As a last resort, ask your pharmacist. Mine will NOT take anything but the Hazardous Waste bottles for my diabetic needles, as our treatment plants are top of the line.

dump them in the trash without that little orange container. People can harvest information from the Pharmacy label and if the drug is a narcotic, they could possible fraud a Pharmacy by stealing your identity. I would just throw them in the trash and then take that bag of trash out so that children and pets cant accidentally swallow them. Flushing them is probably harmless, but I am pretty phoebic about that. I have some OCB when it comes to that. I just cant do that and I dont have a good reason why.

What about burying the pills in the back yard and recycling the container? We have a hole near our pet's grave that we put old pills and then cover it up. We then plant flowers around the edges.

Interesting question.. I would distroy them.. flushing works.. or you could always drop them off at a pharmacist.. I'm sure they can dispose of them.. but the toilet option is good..
Don't throw them in the trash as someone can get into them.. IE kids/pets/etc
LOL.. The real question is.. how many can be flushed at once before there are to many to flush? ** lets not find out.. **
Good Luck!!

You need to take them to a Pharmacy or a Hazardous waste disposal facility. They can be very dangerous if disposed of improperly.
