the God within us (the soul) is the observer that does nothing (or something) with our free will? I guess I'm asking if God is here on earth differently than we think? The observant God not doing anything to alleviate suffering is hard to comprehend. Yet, if we look at it from a soul viewpoint, then it makes more sense, maybe. Agree?

Natual disasters excluded since there is not a free will associated with those.

Icarus....I'm not trying to trivialize suffering, just asking about possible "reasons" suffering happens. We all suffer. That's why I ask that mabye God exists differently than we think.

God wants US to relieve the suffering. This is the basis of the Christian faith. Look in the 14th chapter of St. John's Gospel, the 12th verse, where Jesus says to his disciples: "The work that I do, ye shall do," and then he adds this, "and greater works than these shall you do, because I go unto my Father."

We can wait for God to do something, or act in response to what is happening in our lives. I believe that God is waiting for us to act. Hopefully that action will not be based on Self, but on the awareness that God through the Holy Spirit brings to our lives. Then action can then be capable of transforming the world. Otherwise action will just perpetuate the disorder in the world, which is often perceived as order.
It is ironic, but free will can only truly come about if we move beyond our conditioned responses and reactions, and leave behind Self. Then there is Free Will, but it is also God's Will. Self Will can never be Free Will.
If we look from the Soul perspective, there is sometimes the temptation to think that everything will be OK, and take a passive role, and just pray and meditate. This is like burying our Talents, instead of allowing God to use us as His instruments.
In conclusion, God acts in the world when we renounce Self and allow God to act through us. This is true Free Will, because it is Selfless. When the Self operates, there is no Free Will.

Suffering is a result of SIN
If you touch the stove as a child when you were told NOT to do it do you get to NOT SUFFER???
God allows some things to happen because we take our free will as a LIBERTY to sin.
He does not make us pay the ultimate sacrifice of eternal hell/seperation from GOD unless we reject the free gift of SALVATION from HIS SON JESUS CHRIST.
However, we do as Christians, have Romas 8:28 which says GOD causes all things for Christians to work for the good. So suffering is not all permanent. Even if it leads to death we have eternal life with CHRIST forever. Praise God.

I don't know what a 'soul viewpoint' is but if it's an attempt to trivialise people's real suffering in order to let your god off the hook, then that's pretty disturbing. Why not just accept that a loving god would not preside over a world of such pain and suffering, and accept the consequences of that conclusion for your belief? i.e. Either believe that your god is at best callous and at worst malevolent, or abandon your belief in a god altogether.

God is on His Throne above the heavens and He is aware and controls the suffering that occurs on Earth. There are two main reasons why there is suffering on earth. 1) we do it to ourselves by being disobedient and so God is punishing us. 2) It is a test to see how God-fearing a person is and those who are patient and withstand will be rewarded and the others would be punished.

OK here's something to think about. When I asked for a prayer for a dying friend. I got 16 answers most people said they would pray for my friend who is suffering from cancer and has only a couple of weeks to live. UNLESS by some miracle of GOD'S Devine intervention Gary is HEALED... By asking people to pray, I am hoping for a miracle? So could THIS all part of GOD'S Plan, to cause us come together in prayer? has this been his plan all along? if we pray together will it lessen the suffering of the world? wouldn't that be wonderful and so easy for ALL of us to participate in.

Prior to mortal birth we lived as spirit children of heavenly parents. To help us achieve our divine potential, our Heavenly Father created this earth and sent us here, sort of like sending us away to school, so we could learn some things difficult to learn in His presence. On earth we experience a variety of competing "truths" and people making both good and bad decisions. This allows us to develop a better understanding of the difference between right and wrong.
For example, I tell my children not to lie and why that's important for happiness. Hopefully they'll understand and obey, but they'll probably gain additional insight into this important principle as they experience what happens when people make both good and bad decisions.

Whom on this earth has suffered more than the son of God?
If he allowed his "ONLY" begotten son whom was and still is perfect in every aspect of his life, to be beaten, torchered, ridiculed, then nailed to a cross to die, just for us...then I want to know what suffering have anyone of us endured that could possibly even come close to comparing to the pain and suffering Jesus Christ endured for us?

Sometimes, all you have to do is ask. I believe in the power of prayer, have seen it work. But, since atheists don't believe in God, then they don't pray to him, so, they never can see or understand that He can change things. It is my belief that it is similar to voting. If you don't believe in voting to change things, then, how can you really gripe or complain about how things are? True Christians are voters, so, we change things through our votes(prayers). That doesn't mean atheists are bad people. I have several atheists as friends. They choose to believe their way and I respect them for that. Hope this helps. Thanks for the question and have a great day!
