Restart your computer, chkdsk is a process that is normally run when the computer is booted up.

You always want to run a chkdsk before you run defrag to correct any file system errors. Are you running windows 98? The reason I ask is xp doesn't support chkdsk, it supports scandisk. If it is 98 just open a command prompt and type in chkdsk and press enter. After that's finished do you defrag.

i think there is an error some where in your hard drive, run chkdsk and put parameter (f) to fix the error, restart the pc and let the chkdsk work and mend the error..then every thing will be fine and you are ready to defrag your pc.
