Hi in my experience I sat and read next to the open cage , watch tv whatever talked to him softly, ate snacks that I knew he would like.. eventually they come out to see what your doing and then they will let you pet them gently then you can teach him step up.. Put your hand gently underneath his belly and gently push up and say step up.. he will get the picture.. Good luck

You didn't mention what kind of parrot, but most birds new to your home will take some patience. You have a much better situation if they've been hand-fed.

Never use gloves near your bird is #1. You may offer treats, talk softly, always moving slowly with few distractions like loud voices or music.

Some advise to use a stick first to get your bird used to the command step- up. I have never had to do this. I have found that a quiet situation and patience gives you the freedom to use your hand with a gentle command. Just put one or two fingers near the the birds belly, above the feet and urge him to step-up.

As the bird sees you aren't out to cause harm, he will generally let curiousity take over. (Just a point here-always make sure your bird's flight feathers are trimmed so you don't have a bird on the loose.)

My bird will generally step-up when they see the coast is clear, and you might even have fun in mind. Just remember patience is the key and you should be fine!

Take your time and speak to the bird. Always remember to tell the bird what you expect from him.

Feeding should be done slowly and without rushing. Do Not pull your hands back. If you want him to "step Up" say the words without a a demeaning voice. If you are scared, the bird will sense it, with your voice.

Good Luck!

Well, if this is a new bird he really needs time to adjust...is he a handfed bird this will be easier...hold your stick up to his breast, and say "UP"...and then put him there...do this acouple of times and he will figure it out...good luck

Love and patience. You might try luring him with a treat.
