What is Dandruff?
The skin that makes up our scalps is made from many different layers. The cells start growing in the dermis, which is the bottom layer. Eventually the cells move up to form a layer of dead cells on the surface of the skin (scalp). Normally, these dead cells fall off in tiny flakes that we don't even notice. Washing or brushing hair helps to get rid of the flakes. These tiny flakes are not dandruff!!
Dandruff is a type of dermatitis, which is called seborrheic dermatitis. This type of dermatitis causes itching and flaking on patches of our scalps. The scalps of people whom have dandruff shed many bigger greasy flakes, and these flakes are what people refer to as dandruff. Dandruff is very often distressing for the person who has it. This is because the flakes can be seen in their hair and on their clothes.
Sadly other people might think the person who has dandruff doesn't take good care of their appearance, even when the person is trying hard. Often though most people don't notice these flakes as much as the person with dandruff does!
How do you get Dandruff?
It is not clear why some people get dandruff and some people don't, however there are some things that are known about it. Dandruff seems to start happening around puberty, when glands at the base of each hair make a lot more oil. This oil holds the tiny flakes together to make bigger, more noticeable flakes. It is also known that boys get more oily hair than girls, and boys have dandruff more often than girls.
A tiny fungus seems also to be part of the reason why people get dandruff. This fungus is called Malassezia or sometimes Pityrosporum. This fungus makes the skin cells grow faster so there are a lot more dead cells, and these mix with the hair oils which seems to make bigger flakes.
What things you can do about the Dandruff?
The first thing to do is to work out you really have dandruff, or if you just have the normal tiny flakes of dead cells which everyone has. There is a lot of money made by persuading people that they have dandruff, and that they must use this latest, greatest treatment or else be outcasts. Have a talk with your doctor, to see whether there really is a problem.
* There are some other things that can cause flaky, itchy skin, such as ringworm and other types of dermatitis. Your doctor would be able to look at your hair and tell if they have one of these problems, or if its just dandruff.
When researching this article I found that there are several different things you can try to see if you can improve their scalp health.
* If you have oily hair, using a gentle shampoo every day will get rid of the extra oil. Since the oil holds the tiny flakes together, making big, noticeable flakes, getting rid of the oil is usually enough for some people
* Try and avoid using hair products like hair gels, sprays etc. These hold on to the tiny flakes, making bigger flakes as well
* Make sure you are eating a healthy diet, with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables
* See if you can increase the amount of zinc in your diet. Zinc is one of the things that seems to help keep your skin healthy. Some foods with Zinc are: egg yolks, fish, meat, soybeans, sunflower seeds and whole grains
* Make sure your scalp get a little sunshine. This is does not meat your should sunbake and develop a tan. The sun can still damage your skin if you stay out too long, but a little bit of sun onto the scalp seems to help. You can help this by wearing your out if you are a girl and also not wearing a hat for short periods of time
Dandruff Treatments
There are many types of treatments available today such as anti-dandruff shampoos, which can be helpful if someone is having problems with dandruff. There are many shampoos available from your local chemist shop and many of these are available without a prescription. There are different types of shampoos that work in different ways. Some can affect the colour of hair, and some people can be allergic to some of the products. So it is important to have a talk to the chemist before you spend your money.
When you use one of these dandruff products it is important to leave it on your scalp for five minutes before you wash it off. You may need to use one of these shampoos every day for a while and then as the dandruff gets better you may need to use the product about twice a week for a while.
If your dandruff is not getting better even when you have tried a couple of different types of products it is important to go back to see your doctor. Your doctor may be able to prescribe a different treatment, which could work.
Always remember that Dandruff is TREATABLE!!!
**Please be careful of purchasing dandruff shampoo’s that contains Tea Tree Oil as this oil has been found to sometimes aggravate the situation. If you do wish to try a tea tree oil product then it is very wise to test this product on a patch of skin on your thigh of shoulder.
Remember – Dandruff is NOT a life sentence . . .

No. It means your scalp is so dry that it is shedding. To avoid this, DO NOT use soap in your hair, only shampoo. My sister had the condition, but a Head & Shoulders product cleared it up. Hope this helped!
