poplar has a tendency to get splotchy when stained. use a sanding sealer first ...not sure you can get it to look exactly like oak because the grains are so different...good luck

If you are looking for a natural wood finish, use stain. It will allow the grain to show through. Check the colors at the store where you buy it to get the tone you want. There are many different shades of oak. I like Minwax products and you can save a step if you use the Polyshades type since it has Poly in it.

If you really want to paint it rather than a transparent finish, any paint will do. If you want to stain and apply finish, get a red oak stain, Minwax mades some good stuff sold at home centers, and wipe it on, put some polyurethane on top and you're good to go.
