I asked my date for the recipe - he says "it's a trade secret".
When later on, he asked me about how I made something, being the naive, nice person I gave him the recipe. I feel Extremely resentful of him now. How dare he not share the recipe with me (we weren't strangers. he was in love), and expected me to share mine? Unfair. I have broken up with this guy already, for many other reasons. Anyway, would it have affected you the way it did me? I should have gone for tit-for-tat, to turn on tables on him, so he realizes.

I hate it when people act all secretive about their recipes.

well, was he a chef? then perhaps it was a "trade" secret.

lots of regular folks do this,,,supposedly to keep their dish the most outstanding. "oh, Mary's potato salad is way better than Linda's"

it's pure ego.

how long ago you break up with him?

maybe you are just festering over this point in part due to the totality other reasons you broke up with him.

but truly lots of folks do this.

you however were generous and had a open heart.

if anything I would say concentrate on that aspect of it.

in the future if you want to extend your recipe with others do so but don't do a tit for tac it only keeps you calculating and angry.

please post the recipe for me too please :)

I agree. It's so (how to be polite here?) silly when people refuse to share recipes. Even if it has been in your family for ten generations, just share the stupid thing. It's only a recipe. And don't act all "How dare they" when people ask for the recipe after you share the food. If you don't want people to ask how you make it, don't share the food to start with.

Are you sure that he really made it ,or could someone else have made it for him and he is getting the credit? He also could have gone to the store and got it.But I do have a few recipes that I won't give out ( they have been in the family for a long time.Something handed down from one generation to the next) What you can do at this point is to say to him "Sweetie I really loved that (pie, cake, pasta or whatever) I'd love it if some time we can make it together." This way you can see that he really made it and what goes in it, and such. But if he says no .....don't give him any more of your recipes. Please accept this star for a good question.

I believe gluttony is wanting more and more of anything, be it food, sex, attention, whatever. You think you need it so you continue to do or eat in excess. A lot of people do this out of stress. For them it is easier to overeat or whatever than to try to solve the problem that is at the root of their gluttony. Yes, it is more than food, it is anything in excess. Non-Venal, not selling out character, principle or willing to accept bribes, not corrupted, keeping one's honor, can't be bought. You may be a glutton but you still have your pride. Some things you won't give up no matter what.

Don't you hate that??!!
I don't know why they do that either...it's not like the recipe to Heinz Ketchup or anything. And..most recipes are not so hard to come by with the internet etc...
Next time tell him.....NO!

I have a few recipes that I don't share, but I share them with my wife (even before we were married)... If he is that selfish, then that tells a lot about him...

And I personally wouldn't go that route...

If your date was a professional chef employed by a restaurant, most are bound by a condition of employment NOT to give out recipes.

If this is NOT the case, then your date was just being a petty tosser and you're well rid of him.
