-Check with the church's around your area. Sometimes they have wheelchairs, walkers, etc they send to people.
-Place an ad in a newspaper looking for a free or cheap used wheelchair. Sometimes people have some hanging around they don't need.
- Call the local Pharmacy that deals in selling these items. Sometimes they know of other programs where you may be able to get one.
-If your partner is on disability or social security call the office, and they will be able to help you.

1. The government can help through Medicaid, etc. if you have a doctor's order for a chair. Ask your physician about this.

2. Various charitable agencies, from St. Vincent de Paul to places like the League of Human Dignity can help. Many will give you a basic chair if needed.

3. You can buy a decent chair for well under $500 at most bigger pharmacies, home medical providers, or on-line (Google them. My favorite on-line provider is http://www.ocelco.com)

4. You can ask around. A lot of people who have used chairs for a long time, or who have needed chairs in the past have spares sitting around. Your church, social groups, favorite bar, etc. can often help here.

Now- if you are looking for a POWERED chair or scooter- the job gets a little harder and more costly. However, if you look in your local want ads or shopper's newspaper, you often find them selling for pennies on the dollar to a new one. You can sometimes get old scooters for basically the cost of picking it up and getting it new batteries.
