First of all, let it be known that I'm not generalizing anyone here. I'm just curious as to those ones who believe their scripture was literally written by or totally inspired by God, thereby making it God's word.

Mainly, this is directed toward Christians, because I have more knowledge of the Holy Bible than I do the Qur'an, or any other books. Though those from other religions are welcome to comment, as long as they elaborate. Be sure to mention which one you adhere to, though.

Along with your answer, I'd be curious to know WHY you think it is true, and why you might think it's the 'one true path'.

On an even more curious level, for those of the Christian faiths, how do you go about rationalizing such atrocities as God-condoned rape, slavery, sexism, cannibalism, murder, genocide, infanticide, the condemning of homosexuality, and animal and human sacrifice in the Bible, if you believe it is the true word of God?

For those of you who say the "atrocities" [quotes included] were accounted for when Jesus came, as if God did not like them to begin with, then why did God command half of these things and give guidelines to the rest like they were OK?

wow i have a pretty good answer for u actually..my answer is from a similar question that was proposed so some of it might not make sense:

OMG..don't you all see that having so many different versions of the Bible indicates a corrupt religion? Many authors, editors, revisors, etc. of the Bible only changed/deleted/added verses to appeal to Christians so they would remain faithful (in other words through lies) and to appeal to people who are interested in converting (the same way). Converting through lies and putting in what people WANT to hear is corrupt. For all we know, the all-loving peaceful Bible could have had some ugly verses that were deleted or replaced with more peaceful ones so that Christianity could not look like a culprit or evil religion in the future. CORRUPTION!

An imperfect, flawed religion indicates that it is disqualified as being the true religion, as God is perfect.

When you said, "I think people are seeing the question they want to asnwer, not asnwering what has been asked..."

Well, thats kind of like the Christians changing the Bible into what they want their religion to be like (aka allowing more freedoms, making bad deeds seem less impactful, etc.), not seeking the truth or caring about what is really meant for them.

I am a Christian and I do believe the Bible is the word of God. The Bible says it is, so, if I believe in God because of my Faith, I must believe in his words too. The true path is to accept the fact that Jesus died for your sins and be Born again. However, the great thing about life(which God also created) is that choice and free will allows everyone to do what they think best. Everyone has the Right to believe as they like.
As for the Old Testament "atrocities" as you call them, when Jesus died all those went by the wayside. However, before Jesus came to Earth, some type of accountability and payment was needed for sins. God allows free choice. In order to have "choice", you have to have at least two options. The word "choice" defines that for us. So, what you're saying are "atrocities" accepted by God, they are actually the work of the "Devil'. The Devil rules over the Earth, not God. Prayer works and so does Faith, so God can intervene. But the Devil has to be allowed to present the second choice to others. However, when Jesus comes back the Second time, then all will be put right. In the meantime, bad things happen mostly because people are evil and want to hurt others. Just like in the Old Days. That is the work of the Devil, not God. Hope this helps explain it some. Thanks for the question and have a Super day!

Atrocities are in the Bible because the Bible is truth about man and it does not mean God condones it. God lets us know exactly what man was doing in the world.

The answer is True. The Holy Bible, the Scriptures, are the true Word of God as God inspired men to write. 66 books written by over 40 authors inspired by God. God wanted these authors to tell you the ugly with the good, after all this is life. God gives you His laws and tells man what to do if they do not want calamity, disease and trouble. Does man listen?

God says a curse causeless does not come. Proverbs 26:2 Man causes the ugliness in this world - not God.

The word of God is full of truth, and truth is man have always been sinful. All the evil that existed when the bible is written still exists today. The bible talks of sin to expose it for the evil that it is. Jesus Christ is the way to salvation, and in him was no sin. So since we know we have sinned, now we can recieve our salvation through Jesus Christ and all who will turn from their sins and believe in Jesus Christ will be saved.
