OK, I asked about a JRT, but how about a Basset Hound? What are the pros and cons of having a Basset Hound? I am a SAHM with 5 kids

Thanks, but I wouldn't be asking if I did not have the time or money. I am pretty aware of our financial/scheduling situations and we are more than well off in both areas.

Behaviour can depend on a lot of other factors other than breed- why not visit your local shelter to look for a dog? They will be able to provide you with information about the dog's history and its suitability for living with children (plus you'd be giving a homeless dog a home and saving a life!). Good luck finding a new pet :)

Bassets are neat dogs, but have the "stubborn streak" most hounds are well known for, lol. They also are not the lazy couch potatoes as you usually see them portrayed as on TV or in the movies, they are quite active in "real life".
To be honest.....your best bet would be to do some hands-on research instead of asking here. WHile there are a few very knowledgable people here who will give honest and intelligent answers, there's a whole lot more folks who know nothing but are good at sounding like they know it all, lol.
Only YOU can decide what dog will truly fit in with your family and lifestyle. Talk to breed rescues, vets, and quality breeders, and get hnest answers as to why a Basset Hound (or JRT, or plain ol mutt) may or may not be the dog for you.

lol, you must really want a dog. Great. Basset hounds are mischievous puppies. They can have that hound smell, but overall they make great pets. I fostered 3 bitches (8 weeks old) about 5 years ago, for about 3 months. OMG they were a handful and I kid you not, they worked as a team to get into trouble. Very clever dogs, but they mature into a more mellow dog than the JRTs do. And darn it they are cute. mastiffs360.com

I'm not sure how your pounds are around your area but mine is great! They haven't put down a healthy dog in 7 years!! With in the last two months (I've volunteered there) They've had two black labradors, Bronte and Max were their names, and their past owners specified that they want them sold together and they got sold together. Now they have another two Labradors but yellow ones, not sure of their names but again specified to stay together. I understand you probably don't want to take your dogs to a shelter. I think what you should do is put an advertisement in the paper in the giveaway section. Just state. GIVEAWAY Basset Hounds, 2 Male, 1.5 year, 2.5 year.. Then write about their personality, like good with kids, good with dogs, cats what ever. You could also put up signs around your neighbourhood. I'm sorry you have to give up your dogs, must be heart breaking. Good luck in finding your dogs a loving home.

Ohhhhhhhhh....what a great choice. I love basset hounds. The basset hound is sweet, gentle, devoted, peaceful and naturally well behaved. They fit into family life well and love children. They are mild but not timid and very affectionate. The hound is incapable of biting, but my be stubborn. Stubborness comes from the fact that they are stalkers...the nose rules this breed. House training can be difficult as well as training but they repond well to food treats.

Basset hounds are usually good with kids but they do tend to bark quite a bit but you dont need a big yard for them either because they dont need a lot of excercise.

they are a great dog and loyal. you have to watch the food consumption or they will get fat.
some like to dig holes, if you can deal with that.
you have to keep the eyes and ears clean. The ears are so big.
And if you have lots of stairs in the house not a good pet, will have to much trouble negotiating with you.

basset hounds have more medical problems than a JRT.
also, they are notoriously hard to train. this isnt because they are stupid, rather, their sense of smell gets in the way - they are very headstrong and just wont listen if they dont want to.
I think a JRT would be better.
5 kids??? are you sure you have the time and money you need to devote to a new puppy??
