There is a rare recessive that showed up in the whippets (possibly from a recent mutation) that causes the heavy dogs that have gotten the misnamed "bully". They are pure whippet in pedigree and characteristically rather more soft, timid & sweet than the norm for a breed often regarded as rather whimpy. They require special care to keep them in good shape carring the extra bulk, and they seldom can participate in much athletic activity. We whippet folks have known for sure that this is heritatary for about 6 weeks - we don't know what dogs have the ressesive or what litters may have one. Though the tendencey is for it to be in the preformance lines the study claims to have found the ressesive in show lines as well. The recient publicity has made everyone rather wary, it's unlikely you would be trusted with one unless you build a longstanding relationship with a breeder. If the gene test comes out soon, there may never be another one born since that would be a simple matter of choising mates to advoid carrier to carrier matings. The point of the study from our point of view

"When mutant, muscle-bound puppies started showing up in litters of champion racing whippets, the breeders of the normally sleek dogs invited scientists to take DNA samples at race meets here and across the country. They hoped to find a genetic cause for the condition and a way to purge it from the breed. t worked. “Bully whippets,” as the heavyset dogs are known, turn out to have a genetic mutation that enhances muscle development. And breeders may not want to eliminate the “bully” gene after all."
