My wife's sister's family was hit by a VW in a Toyota. The family of five is a family of four now. She's "with child" again (and yes they will have another baby girl). What did they buy to replace his totaled car? (1)The biggest, tallest, heaviest hunk of iron he could wrap his family in to protect them. Hell with the gas! (2) He chose not only something to be 'above the accident' but something that will carry them all in safe, roomy comfort. Call him selfish, but he has his OWN child's grave to visit because he WASN'T driving an SUV. I'm buying a new car on Tuesday. It's a 41 mpg Toyota Corolla with a hundred airbags. Call me frugal, call me green, but here in CA with all the illegal, unlicensed drivers, call me scared but too broke to buy and maintain something big enough to protect my family. By the way, her brother-in -law hates off roading but loves his family. Luckily, I like little cars.

I feel for your relatives, it's a real tragedy.

I don't think the solution is right, though. As others mentioned, SUVs have their own flaws in terms of safety. And they are a serious hazard for other drivers, too. Interestingly enough, if everybody buys a big SUV, their advantage vanishes. Now accidents will happen between SUVs, and those crahses will be much worse - because an impact force grows proportionally to the vehicle weight.

Correct solution would be to learn how to avoid accidents IMO. If you give it a thought, you'll see that almost any accident could have been avoided if EITHER party behaved differently. Not only the party found guilty, but either party. Just learn how to drive to avoid accidents, and you do not need to minimize their consequences... It is not easy, but it is definitely doable.

To bad about there loss. Big SUV's actually roll over more often and it is that weight high up that makes them unstable. Toyota Corolla body style is a old design. Look to the Insurance Institute For Highway Safety there independent and give the real facts about crash worthiness. My thought is have enough awareness and power and car control to avoid accidents. Do any good high performance drivers schools lately, I do. But when it's your time to die?

So whats your point? You seem bitter and can't understand your uncle's decision about having a large vehicle. Maybe you don't care about how much sheet metal is around you but the bottom line is being a good and safe driver no what car or features you have. Most accidents can be avoided, don't blame the car or worry about someone elses expenses.

I just want to say something, big SUVs are usaully taller so they will tend to rollover during accident and rollovers are the biggest cause of infant injurie and death in car accidents.
