The only wife that bore him any children was Khadijah, but he had a Christian concubine Maria who bore him a son.
Khadijah bore him two sons, also. None of Muhammad's three sons lived beyond the age of two.
Khadijah also bore him four daughters, only one of whom outlived him. That was Fatimah.
After Khadijah died he took on a bunch of wives but no one knows why none of them except his Christian slave girl became pregnant.
He did have an adopted son, Zayd, but Muhammad fell in love with Zayd's wife Zaynab. Shortly after that he got a "revelation" saying that God had given Zaynab to Muhammad to be his wife. Then he got another revelation outlawing adoption for all time, which helped him avoid the impropriety of being married to his daughter-in-law.
So after adoption was outlawed, the only son he had, Zayd, wasn't considered his son anymore.
He was closest to his nephew Ali and his grandchildren.

Interesting question since Abraham had the same challenge and a strong desire to have children. Apparently, Muhammad didn't have the same relationship with Allah as Abraham who blessed Abraham with 7 sons to pass on his inheritance.

why sarah (abrahim's wife )did not have any chidren by him for a long long time ?
