So I'm in search of the ideal healthy breakfast food, one that's of course also quick to make before I head out the door in the mornings. I've found that Quaker Oatmeal (quick oats) has 5 grams of protein in a serving, but only 2 grams of fiber. Compare this with a serving of Cheerios, which has only 3 grams of protein in a serving, but 3 grams of fiber. Which is a healthier, more energizing option? The one with more protein or the one with more fiber?

the oatmeal beats Cheerios hands down. Cheerios is very heavily processed. the instant oats is slightly processed and does not contain even half of the additives, preservatives and other chemicals that Cheerios has. you really should be eating whole oats.

forget about counting the protein intake in grains, the body can only utilize less than 50% of it. so neither one of them provide any substantial amount of usable protein

an ideal breakfast would be several cooked egg whites, 1/2 cup of oats and some fruit

The oats are, by far, better for you. Did you happen to look at the ingredient list? The oats have only one ingredient, while the cheerios have many. This tells you a few things. Cheerios are processed much more than the oats. The less processed a food is, the healthier it is for you. Oats are a low GI food that will not be absorbed by the body quickly, but rather will give you sustained energy until your next meal without spiking insulin release. In addition, it is such versatile food, because there is only one ingredient. Take it and run with it. There are so many ways to jazz up your oatmeal. I eat oatmeal every morning for breakfast, without fail, and I usually put cinnamon, nutmeg, and a handful of raisins in there to add my own twist. There are literally hundreds of ways to eat oatmeal.

Well, I would pick neither, and I would make a smoothie or have a couple of granola bars. But if I had to pick one I would think about which one I needed more of.....do you need more fiber or protein??? Or you could switch on and off....every other day have cheerios and the other days have oatmeal.

you need to consider how this fits into the rest of your diet- how does it help you satisfy the daily requirements for protien and fiber? if you're lacking protien or am trying to build muscle eat the oatmeal. if you don't eat enought fiber through veggies etc, eat the cheerios- both are great options...

i eat oats every morning with a tsp of peanut butter because its great at filling me up and helps my digestive system because its real raw roughage. but cheerios are great too- i don't eat them though because i tend to want to put a lot of sugar on them...

I believe that the oatmeal is the more energzing option. I find that oatmeal keeps me satisfied longer than a bowl of cereal. If you like your oatmeal a little sweeter but do not want to add to many calories, use sugar free maple syrup. It is sooo yummy!!

Sure. Put the Cheerios in a sandwich bag, crush them to your desired consistency, pour milk or water on them and microwave for 60-75 seconds. Use regular, banana nut, berry or peanut butter flavour for best results. :-D

Have oatmeal (generic is much cheaper: use the savings to buy your favorite fruit), with oatbran, and fruit (strawberries, etc., peach, banana, or kiwi fruit) & honey. Look at the sugar loading in the alternatives (see www.mercola.com).
