Japanese has the most complicate writing system of all languages. This is because the kanji characters have several readings and u also have to deal with hiragana and katakana which are syllable phonetic characters that you use in combination with the kanji characters. Japanese also have a complicate system of different degrees of politeness. It's often a headache for Japanese to address to sb the correct polite way without appearing too distant at the same time!

On the other hand, Chinese characters have only one reading and don't have any other writing system, so I guess u will find it easier. Chinese languages (and not dialects) differ as much as spanish to italian or sth like that! It's not different dialects, but different languages. I guess you will learn the traditional Chinese which is the Mandarin! The official Mandarin is the dialect of the Mandarin used officially (eg. the UN).

Both languages have no tenses but Present and Past, no verb conjugation etc. You generally have to think in a total different way than you do with european languages. But this is the fun part!

Japanese is a very beautiful language, but I guess China's development is a better motive!

Good luck!

In general the Japanese language would be easier, as Chinese has both Mandarin and Cantonese. My understanding is that these are each different.

Chinese has many dialects much like the Latin-Romance languages in Europe. Japanese sounds better but Chinese is more useful as there are much more people who speak it in the world. Cantonese is mainstream in the overseas Chinatowns and restaurants. Hong Kong etc.
