It's easy to tell on adults, but harder with young ones.
Females have a pointy bottom and males have a rounded one. The round part is their testicles.
Here is a good site to help you determine the sex of your hamster.

Male hamsters have very round bottoms and noticable testicals which hang out of their body, so if you had a male hamster you would certainly know about it!!
Having a hamster that has had babys comes with no garentees that she wont eat her young. Any sudden noises or movements will make her think her babies are in danger and will eat them. If your hamster does have babys you must stay well away from the cage, keep them in a very quiet room and never disturb them, or attempt to pick them up.
But breeding hamsters are difficult and must be left to a proffesional hamster breeder. Hamsters are solitary animals and will fight to the kill if put in the same cage together, whether they are male or female.

Sexing adult hamsters is quite easy.
Males have two seperate opening between the back legs with a larger gap between them than the females, also you should be able to see his testes near to his tail. the females two opening are very close together.
If you do not want babies then don't put the hamsters together ever, If you have babies then do not go into the cage and handle them until they are wandering about the cage. Usually this is about two to three weeks old. Don't wory about cleaning them it won't matter for this short time.
care sheets are available on my web site

Bring your hamster to a petstore, and they will tell you. Male hamsters are nicer than females, because females tend to get quite agressive while in heat. Don't put two hamsters together to live unless they are dwarf hamsters or for a short time to mate. There is no way to keep them from eating their babies. Sad, I know.

Do not put two of the same sex in a cage together unles they grow up together. When walking around a male uually has a taller body while the female i flatter but usually wide at the rear hips. Do not mean to sound funny but you can see the difference once you start looking. The other way is to just roll it over and check like you do on a rabbit.

you prevent having the babies eaten by having the male out of the cage and not disturbing the Mommy hamster or they will eat there babies cuz they think they are protecting the babies by eating it!

Either a female or a male as long as they're not together.
