(John 5:28-29) 28 Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life, those who practiced vile things to a resurrection of judgment.

Does this sound like to you that those who die are resting in the grave awaiting a resurrection?

well, yes, it certainly does sound like that. I am reminded of another verse...

(Ecclesiastes 3:19-20) “. . .For there is an eventuality as respects the sons of mankind and an eventuality as respects the beast, and they have the same eventuality. As the one dies, so the other dies; and they all have but one spirit, so that there is no superiority of the man over the beast, for everything is vanity. 20 All are going to one place. They have all come to be from the dust, and they are all returning to the dust.”

so it would seem that is just what happens when we die, then the scripture that you sighted will give us hope for life afterwards.

Indeed it does sound like they are in the grave awaiting resurrection. In fact the Bible uses such terms to describe death. Many times it uses the words "asleep in death". (Psalms 13:3, Acts 7:60, 1Corinthians 7:39 are just 3 examples) Jesus himself said “Lazarus our friend has gone to rest, but I am journeying there to awaken him from sleep.”(John 11:11) This was on the occasion of Lazarus' death and Jesus subsequent resurrection of him.
The Bible declares that the dead are “conscious of nothing at all.” At death there is no torment in hellfire, no agonizing wait in Limbo, but simply a return to the dust. Therefore, God’s Word advises the living: “All that your hand finds to do, do with your very power, for there is no work nor devising nor knowledge nor wisdom in Sheol, the place to which you are going.” (Ecclesiastes 9:5, 10; Genesis 3:19) “. Many religions teach that the dead are still alive, but as the inspired Word of God shows, those in Sheol, Hades, or hell are dead, without consciousness. Sheol, Hades, and hell are the common grave of mankind where they are asleep in death.

Yes and there is more to support this. Read in 1 Corinthians 15:35, and read to the end of the chapter. The WORD is clear on this. also read 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18. What happens can be explained in the BIBLE. If you read in Genesis how GOD formed man from the dust of the ground, that is part one, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, that is part 2, man becomes a living being, or soul. just like water is a combination of hydrogen and oxygen, we are a combination of the BREATH OF LIFE FROM GOD, and what HE created in Adam, whcih is procreated by us . If one part is taken the other part retunrs to its source. That is why when the trumpet shall sound and JESUS will shout, awake awake you that sleep in the night, HE is giving us a new immortal body and the breath of life comes to us. We are resurrected. there will come a time when the wicked are resurrected to face their judgement. That does not happen at the same time. more to that..but yes the WORD OF GOD is clear, and GOD is the same yesterday today and forever, remember that GOD does not have to change what HE has already established or else HE would not be perfect.. so HE doesn't. Everything that happens does so in a sequence that does not have to change, because GOD knows how to do it right the first time.

in reading all the answers It is amazing to me that Islamic religion gets tortured before they go to hell while in the grave awaiting hell they are in grief.
Those people have it rough here and then they die and its worse. Those people can't win.
Non-existance is a blessing, guess what guys when you die that's it. No virgins, no torture, a religious cleric gets the same out come as in infidel sinner. Might as well live it up boys.
Now for most of the people who are Christians that is true also. Luke is where Jesus told him those being saved are few.
During the flood only noah and his family were saved.
So for most of us Atheists are right, this life is all there is.
A handful of people will survive into the Lord;s day.

You are non-existance at death. The soul that is sinning it it;s self will die.
So the bible shows that some people become non Existance at death and have no hope of a resurrection.
God told Adam "for dust you are and to dust you will return"
God doesn't lie so Adam is dust. He is only remembered in history books. That dude is gone.

Jesus Christ resurrected Lazarus his friend. if Lazarus was in heaven what kind of friend would Jesus Christ be? Jesus resurrected several people and there where never in heaven. if they where they would of said so. they where resurrected here on earth, and so will our love ones come back to life in a new body. revelation 21 verse 4 says and he will wipe out every tear from there eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. the former things have passed away. thank Jehovah God. also Genesis 2 verse 7 says we are the soul. when Jehovah God blow the breath of life into Adam he became a living soul. when we die our soul dies and the breath of life goes back to Jehovah God

Notice ,Memorial tombs suggesting being remembered by God and his heavenly angels,to be followed by a resurrection ,in the hour suggesting a time period, and not to marvel as Jesus proved it was quickly possible with his angels to accomplish.

Those who die are 'resting' in the grave, awaiting a resurrection.

Well, in Islam, most people are being punished in the grave. It's a form of purification kind of like time already served if you are sentenced in criminal court. So in a way it's a good thing, though I'm not looking forward to it. If you are completely purified, you will have good things happening in the grave, then be judged innocent on day of judgment.
