People at the pet store say that the 9-week old Yorkie we are adopting is o.k. with an older dog, who is very calm, and 3 kids. Is this true?

Yes. If properly socialized, all breeds can live together in harmony. However, you must be careful with children and yorkies. Yorkies are very tiny and get hurt easily.

I owned a Yorkie for 141/2 years. He was a fearless dog, protective of his family, would snap at younger children (although he wasn't socialized with young children at a young age), but a very good dog. Socialization is the most important at a young age (people/other dogs...) Yorkies are terriers. Do some research about the terrier breed and make sure it is the right dog for you. Also, PLEASE be careful about buying a dog from a pet store, they are not purebred (even though they say they are) and they usually come from puppy mills. If you are really interested, do some research and find a reputable breeder in your area or close. Good luck!

No this is not true. I just adopted a 13 week old yorkie and he is VERY hyper. We have a beagle, sheltie, and german shepard, and he isn't afraid of anything. The puppy definately has "short mans syndrom"I have talked to the other owners of the same littler and they also have the same problem with their adopted pup. Thankfully we have teenagers and they know to be very careful with the little guy. This is definately not a small childs dog. We love our new pupppy as much as the other dogs but he is very sassy.

Don't buy a dog at a Petstore:

Generally, the smaller the Yorkie....the more expensive the medical bills.

Yorkies are very hyper dogs and very protective of their turf. They're not afraid of anything, even if they're much smaller. I find it difficult to believe the pet store owner.

I strongly suggest that you do not get a puppy from the pet store. Puppies that are sold in pet stores are supplied by back yard breeders and/or puppy mills. They are bred with no regard to health, type or temperament.

Instead, either purchase a puppy from a reputable breeder who health tests and shows/competes with their with dogs OR get a puppy via a rescue.

Good luck in your search, and please do not support the irresponsible pet store puppy trade!

yes that should be fine, but i would not get it from a pet store, only buy from a place that you can meet the parents!!!-we almost bought a dog, but then the daddy dog growled at my dad, which means it's puppies are going to be aggressive-always meet the parents!
