Its the Chicago of China! And who hops a plane from another continent to visit Chicago? Dirty, ugly, needlessly expensive...why not hit Dalian or Qingdao instead?

Its wildly, wildly expensive compared to other Chinese cities, the touts always try to rip you off and its a pain to try to buy DVDs because whenever somebody gets busted in China its usually in Beijing, its heavily polluted, snarled with traffic, and most of all, almost completely lacks any natural beauty, i.e. a body of water. Harbin, Dalian, Dandong, Shenyang, Qingdao - if you want Northern China, these are all superior choices. And if you Dandong you are closer to the Great Wall than you are in BJ.

If you do it right, Beijing is dirt cheap.
I love it because of the history and the sites.
The parks there are pristine, every place of historical interest is kept clean.
The best time to visit Beijing is September and October.
Love it there.

Chicago??? No, not at all. It is Rome / Paris / London of China. Beijing has been our Capital city since 111? more than a thousand years. You can't compare Beijing with Chicago, totally different!
I need to stay in Beijing at least 2 weeks each month for a project. I don't think it is dirty and ugly or expensive. Indeed, it is charming!!!
Dalian and Qingdao are kinda relax places for vacation (Dalian actually is a seaport for Northen China) but Beijing is the capital, the heart of China and there are a lot of historical sites in Beijing and is very different to Qingdao and Dalian.

I must say you are a very arrogant an ignorant person. I found Beijing to be a very interesting city with Thousands of years of history to explore. The museums, Tianamen Square, Forbidden city, the great wall just outside of beijing is the best presaerve in china, the temple of heaven, the summer palace, the pharmacy across tianamen square, etc, etc, etc. Yes, all China is very crouded and there is a growing polution problem, but that does not make it an undesirable place to visit. I visited other cities too and found them also very interesting and culturally exiting. Look at LA there is so much polution there too that you cant see the stars at night and nobody is saying is ugly.

I thought that China was the Chicago of the world!! I think a lot of people just go to Beijing simply because that's all they know about China and they want to see the Great/tourist attraction/Wall.

Beijing, being the heart of China, has all richness of the history of China of which people always say, when you go to China and not climb the Great Wall, meaning you have not really gone to China at all.

I am going to Beijing first next Friday because flights are cheaper there and I want to see the Great Wall. There is also a lot of business there as it is the hub of the government. I do want to see Dalian and will go to there, Wuhan and Shanghai.

for the most part you are right, I live in Shanghai and when I visit Beijing I think man this city is dirty, the transportation is extremely congested, the taxi drivers are cheats, but the food is GREAT and the historical places are very interesting
