Difficult question. But the most applicable are civil, electronics/electrical and mechanical. The others borrow a lot from the above mentinoned. I am a mechanical engineer who is working as a nuclear engineer( With just a little additional training). It also depends on your location ie where you would live after graduation. Good luck in deciding

2)Electrical/Electronics /Telecommunication engg.
3)Chemical Engg./ Geology/Mining
4)Mechanical/Aeronautical/Automobile Engg.
5)Civil Engg.
6)Bio Medical/Bio Technology/Pharmaceutical
The best paid in the industry category is
1)Petrochemical
2)Oil and Gas

I would avoid Civil Engineering.
They are the lowest paid engineers and have the greatest liability burden.

The work is drying up and very soon there will be a glut of Civil Engineers in America just like in the early 90's and early 80's
The Government is not spending any money on infrastructure projects in the U.S. because they have to pay for the war in Iraq and Billions are going over there for rebuilding. There have been hundreds of infrastructure projects that have been put on hold because there is no money for it from the Federal level. And I doubt funding will pick up anytime soon since Billions are going to Iraq and even if we leave Iraq tomorrow, it will take years for the Federal gov't to pay off the costs of that war and have money available again to fund projects in the U.S.
The residential market has dried up and the Commercial market is stagnant and people are not wanting to invest in commercial projects since the residential market has gone belly up and interest rates are up and construction costs have sky rocketed.
And for the people that say that there is a shortage of Civil Engineers, ask them for the proof and statistics to support that argument. They will not be able to.
"Many people have looked for evidence of a current shortage of engineers and they haven't been able to find any real signs of that evidence," said Michael Teitelbaum, a demographer for the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.
William Wulf, president of the National Academy of Engineering, said starting salaries for engineers seem generally stable -- neither rising dramatically, implying a shortage, nor falling, implying an oversupply. Wulf said the U.S. probably has enough engineers in sum, counting 70,000 to 75,000 graduates each year.

In my experience, it depends upon the industry you want to go into. For example, if you long-term want to get in to the automotive sector, mechanical engineering is the primary education focus. However, that same industry will naturally employ computer science, electrical, and material science engineers among others to focus on specific areas of the automotive design.
However, I also believe that mechanical engineering is often the broadest in terms of application to multiple industries. The focuses of physics of static and dynamic motion, heat transfer, and material science are used in nearly all "high-tech" industries today and as such many mechanical engineers are employed in various capacities.

well soumya i too have just passed out of my 10+2. i have researched a lot on the different branches of engineering.in INDIA,
u have a trend like : ece/cse/it/eee/mech/civil/prod/eie especially in ap(hyd).but after a lot of research over a period of time through search engines, from passed-out engineers, i decide to be daringly different and chose mechanical engg. this for me offer u a very good pay, fame and the biggest of all tests ur talent unlike other branches where ppl are running after.so my advise: go 4 mechanical..good luck..
