It appears there is serious talk about testing new side arms in 45 caliber to replace the current 9mm.

SIdearms are rarely used in combat except by the special forces (who can carry whatever they want), so 9mm versus .45 wouldn't make much differance to the average soldier. Whatever power you lose from 9mm vs 45 you make up for in the amount of rounds that can be carried. I think the Berreta should be dropped but it should be replaced with Sig Sauers not Smith and Wesson. Smith makes great revolvers but their semi-auto pistols are nothing special.

There is no chance that they will revert the 9mm is the standard round used by NATO forces, and the USA will just have to learn to go along with that.
The 9mm round is also found to have enough stopping power for most military forces in the world, including police, more emphasis should be put into training instead of whining about the stopping power of an old 45 antiquated round.

The thought was there to switch back to the .45 because we're more focused on close quarters combat and the need for stopping power is there. But the military can't switch that easily because the 9mm round is NATO approved and so many other countries use it giving us reciprocity with other nations.

i think pretty much pathfinder has the right answer however i could be wrong but if the military follows there normal channels they will never go back to what they have already dismissed
M1911A1 45cal. the 9 is lighter and easier to handle for most and ammo is available plus we signed a contract with fabric national for the weapons and parts for years to come.

I hope so. The 9mm is a worthless round with no knock down power, at all.
I would give anything to have my old 1911 back.

I doubt it. The 9mm Nato round is easier for recruits to train with, and ammo is availavle world wide.

They're doing it now.
The 9 was a poor choice as a combat pistol.
