If you're underweight and start eating a bit more in an attempt to gain some, then is it true that you suddenly pile on loads in a really short span of time and end up being quite chubby?

No if you eat the right things to help you put on some weight. For instance, if you start eating tons of chips you might get a bit flabby. But more food with 'natural' fats in them will help you put on weight safely and slowly. Like whole fat milk and proteins (meat, fish etc).

Not if you add weight by eating the right kind of food. Throwing burgers down your neck won't help you as they have such a high content of fat, you need calories not fat. 3500 calories equates to 1 pound in weight so eating an extra 500 calories a day should give you a weight gain around a pound a week, which is perfectly sustainable so you don't get chubby.

It depends on what you are eating. The underweight person may not have fully developed yet, so a sudden growth spurt, combined with a higher than average intake of junk food will end up making them chubby!

No way, if your naturally thin (like me) Then your metabolism will be very fast anyway.. so no matter what you eat then you wont put on much weight!! I'm currently trying to gain weight and i find it so hard!!

But on the other hand if your not naturally thin and have been dieting or something then yes you will put weight on quickly!

ya of course... but if you are very very tiny thin... then becoming chubby in some areas will make you very sexy and pretty..but if you are average then you might stick to healthy foods..
