Cappuccino is an Italian coffee-based drink prepared with caffe espresso, hot milk, and milk foam, while American coffee is made of coffee and water. American coffee is not as strong as regular Italian or Cuban coffee.
I hope this helps.

Coffee is a general term usually applied to the basic steeping of ground coffee beans in hot water (varying methods abound)
Cappuccino is 1/3 espresso coffee - 1/3 steamed milk and 1/3 frothed milk.
Latte is 1/3 espresso coffee and 2/3 steamed milk.
Cafe Americano is 1/3 espresso and 2/3 milk(not steamed or frothed).
These are the basics. May I suggest - you pick up a copy of the Coffee Pocket Book - This is a great little resource for anything related to coffee!
