Not all program designers opt to create cross platform software. Some do and some do not.
For example Adobe the creaters of Photoshop, several years ago would furnish a software called Photo Deluxe that they packaged with several Printers and Scanners that were sold in the US. This program had both versions of that software on the disc.
It really boils down to this, Are you talking about gaming, or are you talking about general use specific software.
As a rule until about a year ago these 2 different formats didn't play well together. Since the introduction of the newest Mac's they will run either software. Because they have both operating Systems on them.
