i always leave a generous tip with the delivery person, but last month they screwed up my order and sent another pizza with the correct toppings for free. am i obligated to leave a tip again??

on one hand they screwed it up, and i am obligated to a free pizza, why should i pay for their mistake?

on the other hand the delivery boy is not the person who made the mistake, and they still have to drive all the way out to my house.

thoughts?

You're not paying for their mistake--you're putting a few dollars into the delivery person's pocket (& as you've said, they didn't make the mistake.)

Wow, that is a really difficult one. It's a real brainteaser!

I would just explain to the delivery person that normally I would give a tip, but because they made a mistake and do a 2nd delivery because of their mistake I don't feel that it's fair that I need to tip again.

Remember that the delivery person is employed by the pizza company and does not work for tips alone, but also gets paid a salary, so they aren't going to be short with the money if you don't tip a second time and in my view you have the right to explain that you don't feel it's fair to tip again.

If the delivery person feels that they are being exploited by the pizza company because the pizza company makes too many mistakes, then the delivery person can easily take a job at another, better pizza company.

I wouldn't, honestly speaking. If you've tipped once that night, and they messed up your order, then I wouldn't be too happy. The delivery guy should check orders as well as the pizza staff. Don't get me wrong, I do tip generously, but when it's earned. If it's over an hour late or they're sending the right order, over again, then it's not great customer service, so I don't worry about tips. But, I've never had to deal with that situation either.

The delivery boy is not the one who messed up so i don't think you should stiff him. He did afterall, bring you another pizza. He did not get paid extra for that and it cost him gas. You did get the pizza free and the store did not make any money. They are the ones who messed up. The delivery boy went above his call of duty and drove back to the store, and brought it back to do. I believe he deserves a larger tip because he has other home to deliver to and because he came back to you, he most likely got behind.

Generally, drivers are compensated for mileage/gas on top of their hourly wage. When they deliver a remake, they do not expect a tip. When one is given they are typically quite surprised (and grateful!). When I ran a store, I would make sure I paid my drivers for running free orders, or would send the same driver back out whenever possible if it was their mistake. However, not all managers do this. In my opinion, I would simply judge it based on the driver's attitude. If the driver is genuinely apologetic and displays a sense of urgency and concern, I might tip her/him a dollar. (They generally won't be expecting anything, so a dollar or so would be fine for a remake/second trip.) If they are indifferent, no tip. Also, it would depend on if it was a driver error or a store error. Forgotten soda because it wasn't on the tag=store error; forgotten soda because the driver is busy=driver error--and no second tip.

Yes, tip him. Most people who deliver food get very little in wages, and rely on tips.

Since it was the toppings that were wrong it was obviously not the deliverer's mistake.

Besides, next time you order pizza, the delivery boy will remember you, and your pizza will be nice and hot.

I used to be a "delivery boy" for both of the biggest US chains. Both of them compensated you for fuel, and an hourly rate. Tips were always extra. AND, when you are taking the "make up" pizza, you know it's a make up pizza and rarely expect a tip anyway...

In this instance, I do not tip again...

I would go with your second thought.
It takes into account the service provided to you by the delivery person. And you KNOW they don't make a lot of money and could really use a bit of generosity!

If you tipped him the first time, no.
But do keep in mind a lot of those company's that deliver don't pay for the gas that goes in the driver's car. Nor do they pay any expense for it, that all falls on the driver. It also isn't the driver's fault the cook screwed up your order.
So, you don't have to, but a couple of bucks for his time and effort would be nice.

Delivery people rely a lot on their tips. But whether its delivered or served in a restaurant and whether it's free or full priced, you should tip on the full value of the meal.

He may not be the one who made the mistake, but he represents the company. Therefore no tip.
I allways keep it that way, otherwise you become just too nice and allow people to go on with whatever they do and srew up. I mean, SOMEone has to hear your opinion.
I get these anoying phone calls all the time. About lottery, quiz, insurances ect. They just deal with your adress. I asked nobody of them to phone and bother me. so whoever's on the other side will listen to what I think about them. They work and represent the company, so they agree with their workways.
