I have one male cockatiel and am getting him another bird. I'd like to get a different species. What kind of birds get along with cockatiels? I want something larger than a parakeet...Please list as many species compatible with cockatiels. Thanks!

I'm really just looking for a list of bird species that have been known to get along with cockatiels. I know how to introduce them, and the precautions. Please focus on just the question.

In indoor cages, I've only ever seen cockatiels mixed with their own kind or with budgies work out okay.

If you have a large aviary where the different species have plenty of room to keep to themselves and have their own space, here is a list of parrots compatible with cockatiels:
Bourke's Parrot
Budgerigar
Cockatiel
Turquoise Parrot
Scarlet-chested/Splendid Parrot
Regent Parrot
Princess Parrot
Elegant Parrot
Plum-headed Parrot
Red rump parrot
Blue-wing grass parrot
Superb Parrot

In an aviary, the following doves may also be mixed with cockatiels:
Diamond Dove
Ringneck Dove
South African
Masked Dove
Rose-crowned Fruit Dove
Talpacoti/Ruddy Ground Dove
Green-winged Dove
Purple-crowned Fruit Dove (Superb)
Crested Pigeon

Chinese painted "button" quails may also be mixed with cockatiels.
As you probably already know, when mixing different species, always keep a watchful eye on them and know the personalities of your birds. Usually all goes fine, but people sometimes do have problems.

You shouldnt try to put another kind of bird with your 'tiel unless you're prepared to have to buy another cage, just incase. I have read that its possible to put 2 different species together, but i've also read that not all birds like this and will fight constantly with the new bird. If you really want another bird, you should stick with another cockatiel, but even then you'll need to quarantine the new bird, and then introduce them slowly. Birds tend to bond with each other though so they'll probably prefer each other over you. That doesnt mean they wont still be sociable, as long as you still give them each plenty of attention.

Birds have very complex social rules.
You can't just get another bird. Even another cockatiel may fight with him.

Also, once birds have bird companions they tend to ignore human owners.

Basically, if you get another bird, get another cage as well.
They might become friends, but they both need their own space. There is no telling when or if they will get along.

Consider another cockatiel.
Birds generally don't make friends with other species. It happens in captivity, but they are happiest with their own kinds.

If you want something else, get a parrotlet. They stay small and are really friendly.

My cockatiels share a cage with a barred (lineolated) parakeet. It's a small S. American species, about lovebird size, but very gentle and quiet as well.

easily birds are greater helpful off with different birds of the comparable species. distinctive species can many times for freindships whilst people very own greater desirable than one form of fowl, yet permitting them to play in a independent area and having them stay jointly are completely distinctive. Budgies would have the potential to get alongside with yet another comparable sized fowl yet then lower back perhaps not. they might %. on and harrass finches till they kill them, comparable with Teils, in spite of the undeniable fact that which could circulate the two techniques. Lovebirds on an identical time as comparable in length, are generally terrors to different species if placed in the comparable cage and can finally end up harming or killing your budgies. Your cage is an incredible length yet not probable great adequate to function yet another fowl with no great potential for struggling with and hurting one yet another. purely permit your Budgies get excitement from having an incredible great cage to stay in, in case you rather need yet another fowl, attempt and slowly introduce yet another budgie.
