This may be just what happened. People sat her on this rock hurtling through space with little control over anything. There must be something more, they think. They "reach out" to feel something-- perhaps they are reaching out to something that is really there, perhaps there never has been anything.
I don't think it matters, at least not to me. Maybe there really is a Creator when I pray, or maybe the Creator is the only symbol my brain understands for all that I revere about life and this world. Doesn't matter, either way-- I'm in it for the journey, not the destination.

Can you spell f-e-a-r? If you were a minimally evolved primate would you seek a reason for the terror of a thunderstorm? Would you seek the shelter of a prayer when the shelter of scientific reason was yet to be discovered. If you were in a dark alley surrounded by uncontrollable fear would you seek the shelter of a protector? Seems that way to me. Check the writings on primal society. Cause and effect.

People create them all the time, so I suppose there's something in it.
