Below is a great pic of a mangrove prop root. These are really important to anchor the tree and in so doing help to form their little islands by holding the trees and the materials around them as they build up. They provide homes for flora and fauna and help collect the organic material that provides partly for the tree and it's ecosystem.

these roots gives mechanical support to aerial branches.the lateral branches grow vertically downward into the soil and act as pillar. (secondary trunks arising from its branches)here the adventitious root modifies as prop root where in the case of maize it is modifies as stilt root which also anchors the plant.it also act as food gatherers.
