I'm thinking about getting a barbwire tattoo around my arm ... like this one: http://www.everytattoo.com/tattoopics/barbwire%20around%20arm_pic.shtml

What do you think? By the way, I'm in my mid-twenties and resemble my avatar.

I have Phil Ochs tattooed on my arm (folk singer) I also have "Never Die" and a rose tattooed across my toes, with a tigerbat above the toes on my left foot for Tiger Army. I see me getting a couple more musician tattoos. I have an Ochs lyric tattoed across the back of my neck (Sacred are the scars) and an Op Ivy lyric across the insides of both arms (It's beautiful I would say... I wouldn't have it any other way.) I'm thinking about a hot-rod culture tat, skulls and roses and a banner, gotta pick the lyric to go in the banner though. As it stands today, I'd probably choose "In death as in life, I will arise" or "My conscience carries the weight of blood."

That is easily the most unoriginal and over-used tattoo. No, on second thought, the Superman symbol and Mickey Mouse are probably right up there with it. Keep in mind that, if barbed wire is YOU, then go for it. If you've been locked up, and that gives you an idiotic sense of pride, more power to you. It makes it easier for the sane people to tell you from everyone else.

Try and think of something that truly represents you, or something you've done, or something your striving towards, or even is symbolic of someone important in your life (NOT YOUR GIRLFRIEND'S NAME).

Although tattoos are not the permanent thing they once were, getting one removed or covered up can be a grueling process. Take a lot of time to make sure you've got something you can stand for the long haul.

As opposed to looking at a possible tattoo and saying "wow cool" when you see it, try looking for one that, when you look at it, it makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up and causes you to reflect on something important in or about your life. You'll be MUCH happier in the long run.

You say your avatar is reasonably accurate. In that case:

* You look amazingly like dozens of other white-bread blond boys, and have quite a resemblance to thousands of others.

* Your name is presumably Jeremy, same as your avatar, like several other guys in your high school classes, and huge numbers of your other contemporaries.

* You plan on getting a barbed-wire tattoo band on your biceps, like a large percentage of all those other guys.

Boy, if you go thru with it, you are telling the world that you have no imagination whatever. It's not merely a cliche for you, it's absolutely TACKY!

Some counterexamples:

There's a guy at my gym with a perfectly gorgeous dragon across his right upper back, some Celtic bands around his arms, I think a railroad train running across one shoulder with clouds above and trees around, . . . and a barbed-wire tattoo, his very first. (All of these monochrome, by the way.) He's no longer in his mid-20s, his taste has matured, and he's working out how he's going to obscure the barbed wire.

There's another guy who has a band of frogs around his biceps.

One of the trainers has a green rope with brown footballs at intervals above one ankle.

Please, if you have no imagination of your own, surf the 'Net and find some other possibilities. Or find a creative tattoo artist who does his or her own designs and offer to pay for consultation time as well as whatever tattoo you finally decide on between you. And/or talk to your BF or GF.

P.S. Your name in Chinese characters is a non-starter, too.

I would think long and hard on whether and where you want to have a tattoo. For your first tatt I would make it small and hidden. I would also wait a while if you are thinking of getting more than one tattoo as your outlook on yourself can change drastically as you get older. I am speaking from experience as I am in my mid 30's and have 10 tatts and looking back I probably should of just settled for a small hidden one that was very personal to me.

Tattoos are a matter of taste. But remember once done you're lumped with it for the rest of your life. So I would consider it carefully. Don't do something that seems a good idea now. consider the future - will it look so good when you're fifty OR sixty. Not Kidding. You won't be twenty something forever.

i'd try an inconspicuos (or however you spell it) place first...if this is your first tattoo..for some reason i know like 6 people that have many tattoos and you know which one they regret? the on on thier arm...i don't know why but its the one they keep telling me...i have a few but none in obvious places and i love them all...try a hidden one first...if after a few years you still want this one then go for it...

I hear that some states does not recognize body artwork as a discrimination. If you plan to get an arm band, make sure your employer has no such policies againest tattoos.

Good luck!

Go for it. But get the tat on the upper arm, so you can hide it under short sleeve tops, if you have a job that frowns on tats.
