Hi! I have recently adopted a brand new pup (about 8 1/2 weeks old) and have been feeding him what the breeder fed him (Hills Science Diet). HOWEVER, I know that this is not the best dog food. I understand all about fillers, corn, etc... basically, things my pup should not be eating. I've noted recently that although he is playful, he is CONSTANTLY hungry, sometimes VERY SLEEPY, his coat is a bit dull, and he has these white bumps on his scalp. Oh, and his breath STINKS!!!!!!!!! After reading customer testimonials on various premium dog food websites, I've learned about the influence, power, and importance of a GOOD dog food. I have been researching dog foods lately, and I would love to be given some reccomendations on what I should feed him. (Just to note: He is full Doberman Pinscher).

Please, if you have a fantastic dog eating a fantastic food, tell me what you're feeding your dog!

If you don't mind the price, Iams is good. I recently got a pup myself and that's what he was getting from the breeder, so I stuck with it (Havanese so he doesn't eat much). As for his breath, his is not Colgate scent by any means. Once he's ready for adult dog food I'll probably start giving him Purina, like our old dog got all her life starting with Purina Puppy Chow and she always got complemented on her coat and health by her vet.

My experience with rehabilitating a domestic-born wild animal (and in this case, that's what these poor pups are) was a kitten. I got a pair of very thick leather gloves and would catch the kitten and sit for about an hour each day, just wrapping a towel around him (so he couldn't move) and petting him, especially around the ears. Dogs and cats love their ears rubbed. It took almost a month before he stopped biting. Then I could use my bare hands instead of the gloves. I also hand fed him after he got over the biting stage. He eventually would let me approach him without having to corner him, and by the time he was around six months old, he had become my second shadow. Those puppies have obviously not been socialized and are very scared, but time, love and patience will win out in the end.

One of the BEST dog foods out there is Artemis. They have a dog and a cat formula. The best way to find out where to buy it would be to go to their website. We know the owner of the company that makes the food so we KNOW that there isn't anything bad for your pup in it. Especially with all the pet food recall stuff. It's made from all organic, natural stuff. Just go to their website and check it out. We use it with all of our rescue dogs too. Another really good brand is Innova Evo. They are pretty much equal in quality, or Canidae is also good. All of their websites should include stores that carry that brand. Good luck with your pup!!

Stay away from store brands such as IAMS/Eukanuba, Pedigree, Science Diet, Purina, Alpo, etc they are full of cheap fillers & by products.

Look for good quality meat based foods such as Canidae, Chicken Soup, Innova, Solid Gold, Merrick, Fromm just to name a few.

I feed my Danes Canidae and my hubby feeds his GSP Canidae also. My son feeds his Labs Chicken Soup.

I feed Canidae to my beagle puppy, and I noticed a MAJOR improvement in his skin, coat, and energy over whatever it was the breeders fed him.

I highly recommend checking out www.dogfoodanalysis.com, it has a ton of excellent information and breaks it down and explains many things throughly.

I have a beagle and I feed her purina puppy chow. She dont get bad breath and she has a shiny coat with no problems. Most puppies behave like theyre hungry but my beagle knows when shes had enough food and doesnt beg me for table scraps. Theres a picture of her at about 9 weeks on my 360 page. I tried pedigree and didnt have the same results as puppy chow. She likes the taste better. Feed her puppy chow and you'll see a difference in the breath right away and the coat will clear up fast too.

It would depend on your dog what i suggest you do is go herehttp://petsmart.promotions.com/JSP/flashnew.jsp and do the assessment it will determine the best food for your dog based on how active he is what is important for you and also on the age as well as your dogs weight or you can take him to a vet get your dog checked and have the vet recommend what foods would be best for your dog good luck.

Never feed Purina, Science Diet, or Iams.
Also, anything you find at Petco, Petsmart, Walmart, Target and the grocery store. It's all crap.

Look into Innova, California Natural, Canidae (I feed and recommend this), Wellness, and Artemis.

All are good all have websites.

I have had a lot of success with avo-derm. It is very good for their coats and seems to fill them up and I have very food motivated dogs.
