Even if it does make money it still takes the money out of the common man's pocket when he decides to go to the pump. It also takes precious materials for making cars and other things of that manner increasing those prices to an extent
It isn't a sport, it has no point to it, it is the most boring thing I have ever seen, and it wastes space.
It is also bad for children. some of the children wanting to grow up and drive a car around a track a couple hundred times with no physical activity.

Also stop bringing up the athletes on the planes. It's not like nascar is on 1 track every race.

I'm really just thinking of the common working man who has to work 9 hours a day to put food on the table. Everyone of these racing events just takes away from everyone. That money could be used in many other ways that are well... useful.

I'm pissed that I have to spend $40 to fill up my gas tank. I know other things waste energy but they don't waste GASOLINE. You know the stuff that cars run on. Energy comes from coal generators or hydroturbines. Even aircrafts don't run on gasoline they run on jet fuel. We could not put jet fuel in our cars.
So I wouldn't be talking morons. Know what you're saying before you speak.
I wouldn't be anti-nascar if gas prices weren't so high. If it was still around $1.50 a gallon I'd be fine with letting the rednecks drive around in circles, but it's not it's around $3 a gallon. It's somewhat Bush's fault because of the war but it would still bring prices down if they would either find an alternative fuel source or eliminate the sport.
Screw hugging trees I hate those environmentalist airheads.

Don't put if I dont like nascar or something like that. I like a lot of the counter points I see but that just ruins the answer.

I'd figure if all racing events converted to that veggie oil crap or hydrogen it would at least decrease the gas prices $0.20. Even country wide. This could even change the way the nation thinks about what they use. If they see nascar prefers that then maybe would would see a change to a renewable fuel source which would keep the prices low well... forever.

I bet you driving to the mall and your friends' houses is using gas in a much more productive and effective manner?!?
I don't like NASCAR myself, but this is a pretty ignorant way to rip on it.
Learn the basics of economics. Supply vs Demand. There is enough supply, and NASCAR is in demand, so they will pay whatever price.
If you really want to attack the gas issue, I guess MLB will have to stop, the NFL season will be cancelled, and the NBA and NHL next year too. Unless of course you think that planes use less fuel on all the trips from city to city than racecars do.
Also no more vacations for people, again because of the airplane issue. Shut down all cruises too while we are at it, because why would you go on a boat to lay in the sun, when you can stay on the beach and do the same thing.
-------------------------
Response to Askers additional comments:
NASCAR is bad for children because they might grow up wanting to drive a car which requires no physical activity?!?!
I guess Bill Gates, despite being one of the richest people in the world, (don't remember, he may actually be THE richest) is a bad influence on children too. What physical activity does he promote? All he does is play with computers all day.
Also, asker should be a little more knowledgeable about NASCAR. Actually have to be quite smart to understand and apply the physics and aerodynamics involved in racing. And, I would imagine that racecar drivers resemble hockey goalies who sometime lose 15 - 20 lbs in the course of one hockey game tdue to lost water weight from sweating. Drivers, in full protective suits, behind a hot engine for 4 hours straight lose water weight too with all of their sweat. Yes they gain it back, but don't really see a lot of 300 pound drivers roaming around the race tracks because all they do is drive in circles.
If you don't like the sport fine, but state that as an opinion, because all that has been thrown out right now is uneducated and factually inaccurate statements which only add to peoples arguements against you.

If you think gas prices are high you should try buying 110 octane racing Fuel every weekend!
I used to be floored by people of your opinion. I'm kind of used to it now because there's always one somewhere.
I think golf is the most boring sport and a waste of space. But I'm happy that we live in a country where everyone can do there own thing.
I know gasoline prices are a hot topic lately and I'm all for alternative fuels but Nascar is not a problem. The only reason that people of your opinion bring it up is because of Nascar's popularity so you see it on the front page everywhere....so to speak.
Sunoco GIVES all the fuel to Nascar. There's not a Sunoco station within 60 miles of me. Even if there was I'd only buy from them since they do support one of the SPORTS that I hold closest to my heart.
If you want to be angry at something then boycot MOBIL. I do. They gave there last CEO 400 million to retire on.
You can call me an innacurate generalized term like 'redneck'. And I will call you a 'fool'.

It doesn't take money out of the "common mans" pocket. That's what sponsors are for but by buying a Bud, Miller Light, or shopping at Home Depot or Lowes, buying a box of Kellogg's, etc you are supporting the sponsors by buying their products. So if you're that worried about it I guess you need to quit buying products from sponsors that sponsor Nascar, so they wouldn't have any money to support the race teams.
As far as no physical activity.......well those drivers are fit. When's the last time you saw a 300 lbs Nascar driver? There are several players around that weight in the NFL, which a lot of people consider a sport. You go sit in a car with no A/C driving 190 mph, without being able to turn your head, in 90 degree heat for 3 hours and then tell me it's not physical demanding. So before your start dissing a sport, which you know nothing about, try doing a lil research on it first. Then you won't look as stupid.

Money drives the sport. And as with any sport it is about the entertainment of watching it. If you really want to know why they don't cut down the racing is because of the amount of money that the sport generates. Not just for the teams sponsors and venues. The biggest money is in tourism. Some of these areas would barely exist if it weren't for the tracks. Hotels, dining, RV and campgrounds. not to mention all the other services associated with hosting a large groups of people.
As to the waste of gas...yes gas is used, but not wasted. High gas prices are not a problem for these teams. They don't even use any of the standard grades of gas that we use in our vehicles.
If you look in the record books, you will find out that during the periods of gas rationing in the 70's, NASCAR cut the length of races by 10%. They started the race from a later lap number to keep the records showing that the races were complete in length.
And as to the comment on not turning right, you need to do your research before opening your mouth. This week NASCAR is racing in Sanoma CA. THIS IS A ROAD COURSE (you can now take your foot out of your mouth). If you don't turn right on the road course you are in the gravel or in the wall.
There have been many questions in this forum questioning the whole idea of racing and NASCAR. Most are brought out in a tactful way, and get tactful answers. As a racing fan, I enjoy answering these questions. But I find it hard to understand why people have to act so ignorant and pig headed.
I think the Coors commercial says it best:
Some people say that NASCAR isn't a sport...they MAY be right......It's a way of life.

All the racing series in the world combined don't even make a dent in what us every day people use driving around in our normal lives. You act as though shutting down racing will some how solve the gas shortages and high prices. You want to ban any cars beyond 1/house too?
We have shortages because nobody has built a new refinery in the U.S. in 30+ years despite the fact that there are far more people, cars, and longer commutes than ever before. If you feel like complaining to someone give you local state rep or senator a call.
If you don't like racing then just don't watch. If you have an urge to save some gas then start with yourself. I love how you people refuse to change your wasteful lives but want everybody else to change theirs because you don't agree with their hobbies and interests. Take a bus to work, stop idling through fast food drive through, car pool and drive slower. Then maybe people will take your complaints seriously.

Listen, your right, its not a sport, its a way of life, and if
you hate NASCAR so much, then go post somewere else.
What about the NASCAR FOUNDATION, that GIVES!!!!!!!!
How is it "the most boring thing I have ever seen, and it wastes space?" and "It is also bad for children. some of the
children wanting to grow up and drive a car around a track a
couple hundred times with no physical activity." I have a sugestion for you: I want to watch you
drive in a race, and we'll see if you don't think that there isn't
any "physical activity" I AGREE that gas prices are high, but
you don't have to dog NASCAR about it!! It's not NASCAR thats raising the gas prices, there is plenty of oil left. If we're going to shutdown NASCAR, we are going to have to shutdown all sports, and transportation.

I beg to differ with you. I don't think you understand the strategy, point system, and other factors that go into racing.
Also, on smaller tracks across the country every Saturday night, there are stock car races going on that use regular gas and not pure ethanol.
NASCAR is actually using this season to test what's called 'the car of tomorrow', which is highly advanced and doesn't waste gas or have other problems that regular cars do.

Even if they cancelled NASCAR, do you think it would make that much of a difference? 43 cars running a couple of days a week VS. an entire nation traveling everyday? Something doesn't add up there.
If you want gas prices to go down, fight the big oil companies, not NASCAR.

I cant see why people would ask such dumb questions like that. Only a pathetic loser would ask the same question to top it off. Maybe its just my computer but when I ask a question on Yahoo, a list pops up telling me how many others have asked similar ones. I'm pretty sure you seen it but you wanted to waste your time by asking again. As for NASCAR being a sport, last time I checked, its aired on Fox Sports and ESPN. I wont say anything about baseball even though I cant stand to watch or play it. I'm sure there are plenty of people who love it and out of respect, I wont go there. Give us the same courtesy and don't come in here unless you have a decent question rather than pi$$ me off.

More gas gets used by people traveling to the tracks than by the event itself, the amount of gas used by NASCAR is negligible in the big picture.
500 Mi / 4 MPG = 125 gal per car * 43 cars = 5375 gallons per race
It's really not that much.
