i've inherited a 4 year old pekinese male. kind of previously neglected. trying to domesticate him but he has bitten us 3 times. he lets us pet him, loves it when we take him out for walks but when it comes to food, he can be mean.

is there a dog whisperer that can help us? it's not his fault he is this way but we don't want him to be put down so we keep him, but, is it worth paying someone lots of money to train him?

we let him run around in our back yard during the days where it is sunny and shady, feed him 3 times a day, talk to him, pet him. he stay in the house in the eveining. our vet said he is healthy except needs a good wash, hair cut, and teeth brushing.

"cutting" him is not an alternative.

are we way over our heads?

you didnt say he was abused, so I will assume he is normal and just food aggressive. you must find a way become his alpha. some of the ways to do this may seem ridiculous but they work. check out the website for cesar milan, dog whisperer. tons of help and tips to become leader of your "pack"
good luck. I am sure you willl do fine

each dogs has the potential to examine tricks. If hes a healthy chuffed energetic dogs this is large. that should help for him to do the tricks. He in basic terms needs to objective the tricks and prepare them. shop him healthy, and be certain the tricks are not too puzzling working. reason i don't think of dogs might rather like that. he's not lazy so as this is sturdy so he ought to be superb. via the way 2 isn't outdated. shop him healthy! wish this helped.

huh? from your questions im assuming youve never owned a dog before.
what do you mean by "cutting" him? neutering? if so, you should get him neutered.... it will calm down his dominance thing a little, and it will prevent many types of diseases and conditions, like some forms of cancer - it will be much cheaper in the long run to get him neutered now. all dogs should be neutered if they are not breeding for medical reasons.

secondly, why cant you just train him yourself? of course you would never put a dog down just because he is food aggressive.

if you dont know how to train a dog, take him to an obendience school - they will teach you how to train him effectively.

do NOT tolerate food aggression... you are the boss, not him.
and ALL dogs can be taught new tricks at ANY age.

he should be bathed once a week ...... and trimmed once every two months (average - some dogs need more or less).
if you give him some nice big bones to chew on weekly (not chicken), you wont need to brush his teeth as often.
you only need to feed him twice a day - be careful of making him fat. being fat for a dog is VERY bad.

it's just gonna take time to train him. remember, he has been abused and probably still have memories of that experience. take it slow and have patience, i'm sure he will be ok.
sounds like you're doing a good job already♥
