First off, congrats. You are on your way to joining the greatest organization on earth. Second, ignore all the uneducated, unmedicated, simple-minded people who try and put you down. Be proud. As far as getting in shape, Run, do some crunches every night, watch what you eat, anything you would normally do to lose weight. Try to prepare yourself mentally also. Mind over matter. If you don't mind, it don't matter. Your body will do what your mind tells it to. Being mentally strong is just as important as physical strength. Start telling yourself that you will NOT fail, you will NOT quit, you WILL earn that Eagle, Globe, and Anchor!! Your are about to embark on a journey a lot of men won't try. Female Marines don't have special nicknames, we are all Marines!! Good luck to you Devil Pup. Semper Fi!!

I am retired Navy and a former recruiter. ANything htey promise get in it in writing why would htey be interested in you for playing a clarinet? Go online and check for the Marine band most of them have college degrees in music and can play multiple instruments.
The recruiter is hoping you lose the weight and can join so he can make his monthly mission goal.

The number one thing I can help you with is this... capitalize the word Marine every time you spell it out. As a Marine myself it pisses me off to no end seeing people spell Marine Corps/Marines w/o proper caps. But it's ok.. you didn't know, but from here on out try to do it! Thanks!
If you want more info, give me holler and I'll talk more to you. I have a lot of women Marines who I'm sure I could get to talk to you as well, and they can let you know what to expect.
Good luck!

You gotta keep this in the proper perspective. Your recruiter will tell you anything to get you to join and they are known for lying. I remember mine telling me marines don't live in barracks anymore like in Gomer Pyle. You joined a group of hand to hand killers. The only thing you will use your clarinette for in the marines is forcing it through someone's chest. And about your weight... In the marines you WILL maintain a body weight that matches their scale or you will be ordered to a marine fat farm until that weight is off.

I would say question why you are joining the marines?
What are the marines, deep down? What is their reason for existence?
Simple, what is the reason for any military to exist.---To kill, conquer, and destroy.
Don't give me bull about liberation. You cannot force people to change. If they want it bad enough, they will take it (look at the revolutions-american, french, etc).
Woo, your joining the band. You are still part of a machine that is lead by an elected official (currently George "Wer gonna get them terrorists" Bush.
Huzzah!

Firstly, yes you do need to capitalize the word Marine. Secondly, it's pretty sad when someone wants to serve their country, and all she gets is negative comments. I commend you for wanting to serve your country. A high ASVAB is a good start. Just stay dedicated to your workout regime and you should be fine.
