I read the question you refer to and it appears you received a number of answers.
I'm not sure what you mean by "targeted by the fundie Christians". Targeted for what?
In the spirit of the question, though, you correctly referenced the first chapter of John.
There are two possibilies: The Gospels are true, or the Gospels are not true. If they are true, then John 1 answers the question completely. If they are not true, or even only partially true, then who can say what part is correct and what part is not correct, and therefore, can anyone say if Jesus did or did not ever claim to be God?
