there are so many different types of cars out there... it really is personal preference. is paying for gas an issue? Do you want something sporty or economical? Classic or new? You could pick-up a sweet 68 mustang with 8000, or a 2001 Honda Civic with low miles. If it were me, I would get a used Honda Accord, Toyota Camry or a Nissan Maxima, have your mechanic check it out and run a carfax report.
Have fun! do your research on dependability. Good luck!

A honda is the safest way to go!

One word of warning. Don't be suckered into buying a late model, high-mileage import (German). More specifically an Audi. Unless you are proficient in German engineering, you will invest much more than your base costs keeping it on the road.

Example: 2000 A6 2.7T w/ 100k Kelly Blue Book Value about $10,000-12,000
Cost to replace: Tranny $7,000, Turbos $5,800 (est)

Since it's a first car I'd go with a Civic...you'll save money with the good gas mileage and the great reliability.
