Yesterday I had a thought about Scientology, having to do with the reason for that cult's inclusion of the ridiculous teachings about Xenu and the origin of body Thetans. I'm sure that many of you already know of this principle of Scientology (and also realize how stupid it is). Well, it seems that only once a member of the cult reaches a level called OT-3 and is declared "clear," is he or she allowed to hear this teaching. Originally, I thought that it was ridiculous that anyone could believe this load of crap, but then I remembered that the cult of Scientology utilizes brainwashing to gain members. I think that the reason that Scientology teaches this absurd teaching only once a member has reached OT-3 is because that is the stage at which brainwashing is complete. If the member walks out, then the cult knows that their brainwashing was unsuccessful. But if the member is dumb enough to accept that teaching, then they know that the brainwashing was a success. Any thoughts?

Actually, the member attains clear BEFORE OT3. It goes "Clear", then OT1, OT2 and OT3.

And you're absolutely right. It's ALL about brainwashing. Scientology exerts control over its members by means of typical cult tactics, including but not limited to controlling information about internal doctrine & criticism of the organization, severely restricting social contact outside the cult (including the practice of “disconnecting” with any family who question the credibility & trustworthiness of the cult), creating an “us against them” mentality by villainizing a specific out-group (for Scientology, it’s psychiatrists), & claiming all those outside the cult are unenlightened.

Thanks for explaining about Scientology. I had no idea it was that wierd! Travolta and Cruise seem so normal and strong as individuals and yet they are both Scientologists. Interesting! I'll have to read more about it! But how strange? How can intelligent people accept bunk like that? It's just amazing the lengths people will go to, to find what they define as the answer for themselves. I say the wierder it is, the more suspicious I'd be! Xenu and Thetans? OK, Nano Nano, beam me up Scottie! Oi-eee-vay! What next? We are such inventive beings aren't we? Ron L. Hubbard sure had an imagination! A real life George Lucas! He should have made movies instead! LOL!!!

It sounds a lot like a lot of religious systems based on "secret teachings." These include ancient Greek mystery cults and the "sacred flutes" rituals among the Sambia tribe in New Guinea. Also a lot of modern cults.
