My son may have high functioning autism or pdd. He was stuck on pretending to be one character from TV. He now changes depending on what show he just watched. Is this normal for a child to be so involved playing and role playing characters such as peter pan, pink panther or tom and jerry?

yes my son acts like the characters he sees on tv. i don't see any harm in it. now if it is non stop 24/7 then there is a problem. maybe you should reduce the amount of tv he is watching. you should play with him more. my son and i play this gave he'll say mom you are spongebob and i am patrick. hi spongebob and i'll tell him hi patrick. he thinks it is the funniest thing. we also do arts and crafts together and we plays sports outside. sorry if tmi but the point is if you are concerned cut back on tv time. good luck!

it is normal however i limit how much tv time and puter time and game time my kids get ages 4-10 i noticed when my boys were younger compared to the girls the boys seemed to take the characters and turn them into "a part of play" more so than the girls the girls do it to but they are tamer about it. so just be careful what he is watching i had to totally not let my boys watch any shows that had fighting not even power rangers!! due to the acting out of what the chacters did1 4 year olds have great imagination it is a great age for discovery and things so gl and enjoy!!

Hey -
This person must have the autism concern for a reason (medical advice etc)!

I suggest you try not to focus on what is normal and what isn't, instead focus on what makes you and your son happy, what things enable him to learn, and look for opportunities for social interaction for him.

By the way, sometimes people say that cutting out milk from the diet greatly improves behavioural problems that manifest in a similar way to autism. Just a thought.

Shad.

It's called an imagination and, in my opinion, is one of the best traits a child can exhibit at that age...and for the record, I have a 10, 13 and 14 yr old who are all happy healthy straight A students...with great imaginations.

It is not only very normal, but it is quite healthy. It gives him a chance to experiment with acting in different ways, and is also a healthy expression of imagination. I'd even go so far as to encourage it by calling him that name and playing along (for a little while anyways).

Yes it is perfectly normal however, if he pretends to be a super hero watch him about jumping off high areas lol......my child will jump off the counter in the kitchen, or the back of the couch pretending to be superman......he is 4 on the 22nd of July!

Absolutely! It's called an imagination! Good for your child taking those characters from the 2d tv and making them 3d in your home! Be proud and encourage it, I would even see if they could make up his/her own characters who would be friends with the ones from TV.
Have Fun!!

Of course. The kid is trying to define himself and is copying anything at hand. Autism? How about growing up! Have you gone though the invisible friend phase yet? Did/will you panic over that?

It is absolutely normal. It is wonderful for their development. Imaginary play helps build security and brings out their personality. I understand that it may drive you crazy. It shows you how much they pay attention so be careful with what he watches. Sit back and watch him one day. It is truly amazing!!
