I would say Phoenix and Vegas. They're both growing rapidly. I think something like 100K people move to the Phoenix area a year and possibly more than that in Vegas. Where ever there's a lot of new growth, there are a lot of job opportunities. What ever you do, don't go to Seattle or Portland, OR unless you want to work as a barista in a coffee shop.

The Bay Area is not a good place to be looking for work right now. CA unemployment is 12% and in the bay area it is, in reality probably closer to 17%. Craigs list can give you an idea of just how tough it is. If and when your BF get a job in Redwood City you can start searching for a job, but even then it isn't going to be easy.

Probably Las VEgas. The population is growing 6000 a month in Clark County. And jobs seem to be very ready in the area.

Ok, from my personal experiences I would have to say California, Atlanta, Boston, Los Angeles would be something to check out. You can check with the sensus bureau/dept. of labor
Of course, this depends on your education, experiences, credit, criminal history, ethnicity and who you know always helps and sometimes more that what you can bring to a table. Unfortunately, this is how the world has come to.
