If you bought it on the street than it is definitely stolen, probably used in a shooting too! It's 1 year mandatory for possessing a firearm unlicensed , and 1 year for each round of ammo you have too! Turn it in to the police right away. You can even call the police and tell them you found it by you're house, and they will come and get it. Just don't throw it in a bush for a child to find.

If you know it is stolen, it may be smart to go to the police and check it out. Poseesion of a stolen weapon isn't good, no matter how cheap the gun was...it was cheap for a reason.
What I don't understand is if you suspected that the gun was stolen when you bought it, why did you buy it?
All you did was give someone your money to be burdened with the thought of being caught with a stolen weapon, as well as the risk of being blamed for a crime that you may have no clue about, and never commited.
Had you bought it new, or through the usual legal methods, none of this would be a concern. It may have cost more, but I think it would have been worth it.

Not a lot really, unless you stole it. Possession of stolen goods is a serious offense, if you know it is stolen. If you suspect it is stolen, take it to your local police and they can check and see. If it is, it will revert to it's original owner and you lose what you paid for it.
Try to remember everything about the seller you can, because he may be the thief, if it is stolen. If it is not stolen, you have a bargain. To my knowledge no state has a law against transfer between individuals.
some states do require a permit for ownership of a handgun, so take that into consideration, also.

In Virginia we have a Project Exile, which gives an automatic 5 years of prison to anyone in possession of a stollen firearm. No time off for good behaviour, to appeal, no parole, FIVE years. I think it should be 10 to 15 years personally, but 5 is the limit our legislature set.
