I would agree with everyone else in saying count this as a blessing! For her it probably isn't a know how but do I want to put forth that much effort??? She probably has no reason to or doesn't have another hound to teach her to sing so she simply doesn't.

If this is something you are very interesting in and want her to howl then I would suggest singing with her, get her in the mood or take her on playdates with other bassets to see if she can pick up the idea of it.

I feel every dog is diffferent, I have never owned a basset hound.. but i will tell you this, I have an 11 year old mutt that just learned to howl from my other dogs.. it sounds really funny cause you can tell she is old when she does it, I just think your dog might not want to. or has no reason to..

well i would suggest if it really concerns you sir then talk to your vet about it and see what they say or look up on line at goggle and ask them the same Q.

My basset howls at the train and alot of stuff but then again he is 9' yrs old too.

Sorry! I can't give your more help but hope this eases your mind somewhat!

Yes, Basset hound will have known to by four months old, maybe your hound just has no reason to howl( You must have taken good care of it!), but believe me, it must know to howl, it' s just that it doen' t want to.

I'm sure that she knows how to howl. Some dogs just aren't very vocal. Mine barks everytime she hears something outside. My father-in-law's dog only barks when he is pissed at someone. One of my friends has a dog that only howls when she wants attention and is feeling ignored. Maybe your dog is happy enough to not have a reason to howl.

I don't think it's a matter of "knowing" but more of instinct. Maybe she has had no reason to howl so far. Personally, I'd be thankful for that instead of concerned!

I have a beagle mix that doesn't bark unless someone strange comes up to the house. Let's both count our blessings.

I say that she does but chooses not to. In a way it's a good thing, not as much noise around. Hope this unproffesional opinion helps.
