I found a used S&W 9mm hammerless handgun at a local gun store. The model is either the 469, 3914, or a 908; i didn't get a good look at it and have only held once so i do not know the model. It was black, hammerless, and had a square looking trigger guard, not circular. It was priced at $400 and looked in really good condition, with maybe one (if any) scratches on it. The blueing was still in really good condition; I was wondering if this would be worth the $400 since I have only seen these models on the internet and no where else.

Any of the models listed are well worth the price. When you ask a question about firearms, you need to be specific so an exact figure can be more nearly had. Do not listen to anyone about the quality of S & W, especially from someone who hasn't or wouldn't own one.
The same stuff can be found in the auto questions.
You would think some of these people were salesmen for the make and model they tout, instead of being here just to answer a simple question.

That would be the model 469. It has been discontinued for quite awhile now. I have no experience with it, but I wouldn't get it.
For a little bit more, you should be able to pick up a S&W M&P (Military and Police), much more current and better design.
Or a Springfield XD.
Glock and HK will cost you some more.
The real question is how does it feel in your hands? If it doesn't make you fall in love with it, then no matter how good the deal is, you probably won't shoot it much.

If it is a used alloy-frame 2nd generation (ex. 459) or if it were even a 1st gen (ex. 59) I would not pay $400 unless it had never been fired by a previous owner and was in mint condition. The only S&W 9mm that I would fork over $400 for woulf be a 3906, because they are kind of hard to find.

No. They are all the same. The 9X19 mm cartridge was designed by Georg Luger for his new pistol, which is where the "Luger" comes from. It was modified from the earlier 7.65X22 Parabellum and so is also called 9mm Parabellum. "Parabellum" comes for the old Latin saying "Si vis pacem, para bellum" (If you would have peace, prepare for war), the motto of Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken (DWM) which was the first manufacturer of the cartridge. It was adopted as an official round by NATO so you may also see ammunition marked "9mm NATO." It is not the same as some other rounds, like 9mm Marakov, 9mm Browning or 9mm Steyr. There is a huge number of pistol, revolver and rifle rounds that are approximately .35 inches in diameter, so be sure you are getting one of the following: 9mm Luger 9mm Parabellum 9mm NATO 9x19mm

Smith & Wesson has made, and continues to make, some excellent semi-auto handguns. Before anyone can tell you if it is a good deal or not, it would be imparitive to know what model you are looking at. One thing to keep in mind about Smith & Wesson, all of their handguns carry a lifetime warranty, and they will generally extend that warranty to used weapons that are purchased legally. They will even pay for shipping should you ever need to send it in for repair.

I have a Sigma Series and paid 350 for mine three years ago I would say 275 to 325 would be fair price. I love it don't lesson to these people that say Smith and Wesson suck they have been around for a long time and parts,if need be are not that high priced and are easy to get.

Stay away from the S&W semi auto's. They make great revolvers but they're auto's suck. Get a Sig, H&K, Glock. You get what you pay for. Good luck.
